Unimpressed
Since visiting the place for the first time just over two years ago, I've loudly sung the praises of Jacky's Kitchen, an unfussy place serving north Chinese food just off Hurst Street n the city centre.
Until now. A recent visit with my teenage son left me underwhelmed.
The food, I thought, was unimpressive and the prices higher than I remember. There'll be a review in Thursday's Food + Drink section of the Mail.

Hi Paul,
I was interested to read the review tonight - not because I've ever been to the establishment in question, but because I've been wondering about lamb cooked Chinese-style for a while now. My local takeaway doesn't include it on the menu so for many years I assumed it wasn't something the Chinese ate; but then I thought, why not? I haven't found a recipe yet that makes me want to cook Chinese-style lamb, so I wondered which other ingredients made up the dish you tried - and also whether it was the lamb itself you disliked, or if you think Chinese lamb could work if cooked differently?
Cheers
Hi Louise. Thanks for reading the review.
The lamb dish was actually quite plain - cubes that had (I think) been barbecued. I suspect they were marinated in spices (maybe a little chilli and five spice powder?) before being cooked then sprinkled with cumin.
I loved the meat - everything barbecued lamb should be. It was just that the kitchen was heavy-handed with the cumin.
I have eaten a wetter lamb dish in a Cantonese restaurant - if memory serves me well it was strips of meat in a black bean sauce with a few crisp veg.
