Pub grub puzzle
A friend phoned asking me to recommend a typical British gastro-pub in the centre of Birmingham for some Dutch visitors who are heading here.
There was no where I could think of.
There are plenty of pubs where you can be sure of a good pint and might be able to get a decent sandwich or pie. And there are a few places like the Metro Bar serving restaurant-quality food.
But where are the places like London's famous gastro-pubs or, say, the Highwayman in Kirkby Lonsdale in Lancashire?
Places that serve hearty, well-crafted regional dishes?
You know, I reckon there's a gap in the market in Birmingham city centre for such a venture, even in these recessionary times.
Who wouldn't want to sit down to a plate of great quality faggots and mushy peas following by a bowl of spotted dick and custard washed down by a glass or two of ale?
Enough of chain pubs. Let's have a place where visitors from overseas can taste the real Brum.

How about,
The Old Contemptibles (City Centre)
The Swan (Harborne)
They are 2 nice, pub type environments
Not sure the Swan - or any of its sister pubs - gives a taste of traditional pub fare:its menu includes influences from around the world.
I'm fond of the OCs, though it strikes me as place to enjoy a decent pint (or two or three) rather than a sit-down meal.
Friends have recently praised the hom-ecooking at the Prince of Wales in Moseley, but I've yet to try it.
