Curry tour
We use the term "Indian restaurant" very lazily to describe anywhere that serves food from the sub-continent.
Into this category fall restaurants that serve dishes based on Pakistani and Bangladeshi cuisine as well as those that serve food from India itself, which, being a vast area, has a diverse range of styles.
It's a bit like using the term "European food" to describe nosh from the tip of Italy to the far north of Finland.
The diversity of Indian cuisine will become apparent at the excellent Lasan just off St Paul's Square on April 29.
The restaurant is hosting an evening themed "A Chef's Tour of India" which will feature an eight-course meal with different specialities from the regions visited by a team from Lasan when they travelled to India recently.
It sounds fabulous and - diary permitting - I intend to be there to learn more about the country's food.

I wish more of Birminghams curry houses had smaller, but more authentic, regional menus. It's a shame that some great regional specialities are lost among the sea of bhuna's and balti's.
I guess that's why places like Lasan and Jyoti's are getting accolades left right and centre. Know of any more places to get authentic Asian cuisine in Brum?
I agree, Tom. Far too many menus read the same. Have to say, though, I like the south Indian breads at Blue Mango just off Broad Street and they do serve some unusual dishes.
Have to check that one out, I love to try different breads, a personal past-time of mine!
The cottage in Stirchley used to do some authentic Bangladeshi fish dishes, but now have removed all fish from their menu as they can no longer ship the fish in from Bangladesh, and won't used any UK fish in replacement.
Authentic isn't always good, though. I once ate a curry made with sheep's feet and it was one of the worst things I've ever tried.
