Heart of Oak
There comes a time over the festive period when we groan: "No more food. No more drink. I've had enough."
Then later - usually about five minutes later - boredom and greed kick in and off we go in search of a treat.
Last night was such an occasion so off we headed for a meal out. And what a treat it proved to be.
We went to The Oak at Hockley Heath and the place was packed, suggesting others shared our weakness of resolve.
The pub has had a number of identities and styles over the years, but it's latest incarnation is, I'm sure, a winner.
The menu has a few exotic influences, but the focus is on hearty, great quality food at a good price.
There'll be a review in the Birmingham Mail's Food + Drink section on Thursday, January 8.
Suffice to say now that The Oak will be a place I'll revisit.

Did this used to be the Royal Oak? I went many years ago and vowed never to return after the soggy salad and slow service.. will have to give it another try in 2009!
PS - Does it still have a play area for kids?
I'm not sure, Laura. Its last name was Oro - it combined a bar, a restaurant and a food hall...very odd mix that didn't work.
I wonder if you're thinking of the Old Royal Oak, which is nearby.
I saw no sign of a play area when I was at this place.
Anyway, I hope you have a great meal if you visit...check out the chocolate Guinness cake, by the way!
