Bulli for me
Among the gifts that Santa left beneath the Christmas tree was a fabulous book about the Spanish restaurant El Bulli, frequently voted the best in the world.
It's jam-packed with photographs and information, with a few recipes scattered through for those who have access to ingredients such as liquid nitrogen and equipment such as syringes to create little bubbles of flavour.
The pioneering cuisine at El Bulli - so modern it makes the food of Heston Blumenthal appear dated - mightn't be everyone's cup of freeze-dried tea, but it fascinates me.
So much so that I've resolved in the new year to seek a place at the restaurant through the ballot system which determines who will be be able to eat there.
Fingers crossed....

I too had the El Bulli book - it's fab.
What do you think our chances are of getting a reservation - and then getting flights and accomodation to match???
The chances of getting a booking are about the same as a three-legged carthorse winning the Derby, I reckon. But if I do succeed, I'd make sure I got a flight and a hotel.
Good luck in the ballot, Julie!
In the meantime, I'm planning to book a table for this summer at Mugaritz in San Sebastian - the chef trained at el Bulli and the menu looks fantastic. It's in the world's top 50 list. Can't wait...
