Lasan feast
Buffets are not my favourite way of eating. Quality is too often sacrificed for quantity and they are generally the domain of gluttons rather than gourmets.
But last night I visited Lasan for a special Punjabi buffet that was being held and to say I was very impressed indeed would be an understatement.
The deftly spiced and well balanced dishes would have been top-notch had they been served a la carte rather than as a buffet.
Highlights included sassy and crumbly lamb koftas and a rich dish of black lentils. Breads, too, were excellent.
It's long been my view that Lasan - which is just off St Paul's Square - is this city's finest curry house and last night's meal has done nothing to change that view.
It was good to see punters pouring into the restaurant. It deserves to be packed.

Would I be right in thinking that there is a smaller version of Lasan on the Stratford Road? It Would be good to know if that one is as nice, as it's closer to me and I'd rather go to that one. Perhaps you could pay that place a visit and blog about it? Be good to hear what you think and perhaps save me taxi fare to town.
Hi Laura. Yes, there's a sister restaurant called Lasan Eatery opposite Waitrose on Stratford Road. It's smaller with a simpler menu than Lasan itself, but still very good...especially the dhosa. I think it does takeaway, too.
If you go to this website's home page and search 'Lasan', you'll find my review of Lasan Eatery from earlier this year.
Or, go to Birmingham Plus (http://www.birminghamplus.com) and read my review from about a month ago.
It's good to see the place is getting the attention it deserves - good Indian food at good prices in unfussy surroundings is something to be encouraged.
