Can't cook, won't cook

By Paul Fulford on Oct 9, 08 08:45 AM

In her column in Friday's Mail, my colleague Maureen Messent, inspired by the latest Jamie Oliver series, has a right old pop at people who are too lazy and ignorant to cook proper food.

As always, she makes her point with more force than some might think appropriate. But, largely, I share her opinion.

There is no excuse for feeding your kids a diet of fat-laden, salty and sugary ready-meals when it's easy to whip up nourishing, home-cooked food.

Some argue that it's cheaper. Rubbish.

Pop to the markets and you can buy fresh fish, meat, fruit and veg at prices well below those you'd find it the supermarket.

With a bit of skill and imagination, you can prepare a meal for pennies.

Trouble is, cooking skills aren't being passed down the generations and, for that, we must blame the fractured society in which we live.

Jamie Oliver deserves praise for trying to get us to give to food the importance it deserves.
