Office cooks

In between fulfilling the onerous duties of their jobs, three colleagues are spending a lot of time chatting about cooking.

The reason: all three have started a cookery course together.

They're taking about filo pastry parcels and red pepper risotto and homemade ravioli and all sorts of other dishes that they're producing at night school.

At one time, of course, domestic science lessons at school would have equipped them with the skills needed to cook. Sadly those days have largely disappeared.

All three colleagues are young (compared to me, anyway) and I think it's a terrible shame that anyone should reach their stage of life without becoming a competent cook.

Cooking is a fabulous skill to possess. Preparing food is a great way to relax. Producing tasty dishes creates a sense of achievement. Sharing it with family and friends is a joy.

We let down our schoolchildren by leaving them ill equipped to cook properly or appreciate food thoroughly.

Best of luck to my workmates in their culinary adventure. And how about bringing some samples into the office...?

I never did domestic science lessons but I cook and it's all down to my parents who where both very good cooks and got me involved pretty early.

I was cooking the Sunday dinner by the time I was abut 11 or 12 and and they where happy to let me, helping here and there when I needed to learn a new technique - The meals usually came out tasting pretty damn good too.

40 years on and I still enjoy cooking, cook things from scratch, save money because of that and encourage my children to cook.
I have to admit that I'm shocked by the lack of cooking knowledge that their friends show.

Blame the parents.

Agreed. Too many parents think slapping a ready-meal in a microwave is cooking.
