Taking the high road...
We're planning a long weekend in Edinburgh soon and I've been scanning the internet looking for good places to eat.
First stop is likely to chip shop for a battered haggis and loads of brown sauce, closely followed by a visit to a sweet shop for some chocolate macaroons and tablet.
But we'd also like to eat somewhere upmarket and I've spotted two candidates - David Wishart and The Kitchin (owned by Tom Kitchin (who appeared on Great British Menu).
Both have modern, interesting menus and decent wine lists. And the prices seem similar to those at comparable places here in Birmingham.
But all recommendations will be gratefully received.
It's a while since I've visited Edinburgh and I'd welcome any updfate on its eating scene.
But, please, no mention of deep-fried Mars Bars or deep-fried pizza. Such delicacies would prove too stodgy even for a glutton like me.

Both restaurants are a real asset to Edinburgh’s food and tourist scene offering an exceptional level of service and cuisine. Martin Wishart, not David, has a pleasant formal restaurant in Leith overlooking the Water of Leith, very good service, excellent food and an unforgettable experience.
Tom Kitchin’s The Kitchin is just a hundred yards away in Commercial Quay overlooked by The Scottish Executive building in an old Bonded Warehouse. The atmosphere here is much less formal, no tablecloths, but equally professional friendly service, outstanding cuisine, taster surprise recommended, and a very extensive wine list.
The Kitchin has just added a Catey Award for Best New Restaurant in the UK to its long list of achievements within the 2 years it has been open.
Both establishments are tipped to expand in different directions but The Kitchin appears to be establishing itself as the Edinburgh ‘home of food lovers’ from around the world.
Thanks for the info, Ron. Wonder if my bank balance will allow me to try both?
PS: why on arth did I call the restaurant 'David Wishart' when I knew full well it was 'Martin'. The ravages of age...
If you love fresh seafood, make sure you try The Mussel Inn on Rose Street.

Just checked out their website - looks well worth a visit. Many thanks, Bill.
Any recommendations for the best haggis and chips in town?
