Creme de la creme

I'm sitting in the study of my sister-in-law's rambling Victorian flat in a posh bit of Edinburgh as I write this blog before deciding where my wife and I should eat tonight.

Only one thing is certain about this evening - it will involve a final visit to Bennetts Bar, a wonderful watering hole near the Kings Theatre.

We arrived here on Saturday and have been mightily impressed by the standard of food and drink over the past few days.

We've been more impressed, though, by the buzz that exists here. Much of it down to the Festival.

Some restaurants we'd planned to visit proved to be fully booked. Those restaurants at which we've eaten have been busy and bustling. Streets and bars are packed.

Birmingham hosts many major events, but nothing quite like the Edinburgh Festival which brings in so many people from so many places over such a prolonged period.

Wouldn't it be great - not least for our restaurants and bars - if Brum could stage something on a similar scale?

Thinking caps on, folk. What could Birmingham do to join - as Miss Jean Brodie might say - the creme de la creme?
