Smeg off

By Paul Fulford on July 25, 2008 3:18 PM |

Smeg is a range of cookers with a high reputation and the sort of name to set some people (me included) sniggering. But right now I'm not smiling.

In the fridge is a magnificent free range chicken which I'd intended to roast for Sunday dinner.

Just across the kitchen is a Smeg cooker, the oven of which has stopped working and which will not be repaired until next week at the earliest.

The challenge: what to do with the bird.

I reckon the answer is to poach it in stock flavoured with a little white wine, orange and lemon and then serve it with rosemary, lemon and almond cous cous, a roasted vegetable salad and that fiery North African paste, harissa.

Sounds good. But after a holiday abroad, I was really looking forward to a good old English roast.

Grrrr...I hate household electrics sometimes.
