No to microwaves

A colleague, returning from the newsroom's kitchen, made an interesting observation this afternoon.

Whatever is cooking in a microwave oven smells the same, she said.

She's right - soup, pasta dishes, pies and pasties all seem to emit the same greasy smell. The exception - and there's always an exception to every rule - are the kippers that a workmate sometimes heats up, unmindful of the way their smoky, fishy stench spreads across the floor.

I don't own a micrrowave and can count on the podgy fingers of one hand how often I have used the device in the office.

I think they encourage lazy people not to cook and instead to buy the sort of mass-produced, hideous ready-meals that are turning us into a nation of pasty-faced fatties with the palates of water buffalo with gingervitis.

Plus the heat they give to food is unnatural. And they ruin textures.

We move offices soon and I hope the microwave doesn't follow us.

Let's stick up for real food properly cooked.

I love cooking my own food, but as you know there aren't cookers etc provided in the workplace, therefore the food I have cooked at home, delicious it is too! I use the microwave provided us with the opportunity to continue in our own culinary delights, the other benefit (not being French and enjoying a 2 hour lunchbreak)is it is quick and easy, oh yes, a bit more green than a cooker too!

I hope the microwave does follow us!

Fair point, Jeff. But I still maintain that microwaves spoil even the best food.
