New restaurant a hit
With my wife on holiday in southern France with her friends, I've proved my credentials as a new man by taking a week off work to look after my 13-year-old son. His brother, now 20, arrived home from university yesterday.
So off we went last night to check out Piccolino, the Italian restaurant newly opened in Brindleyplace in the space that once housed Ray White's Brasserie Blanc.
I'd eaten at its launch party last week and left impressed. Last night was no different, though I thought the prices were a touch high. A full review will be in the Birmingham Mail in a couple of weeks' time.
Coinidentally, my boss Steve Dyson was with his wife at a nearby table. I hope their meal was as enjoyable as ours.
I warmed to the place - it's part of a small chain but seems to have a genuine commitment to quality, freshness and seasonality.
If you go, check out the garlic bread. Very good.

We enjoyed it, Paul. My special was something like crispy sea bass under a potato mask with creamy white wine sauce. Delicious. And filling. No nouveau cuisine here. Or did they see me coming?
Glad that Piccolino pleased the discerning Dyson palate, Steve. It struck me as a place that tries hard to maintain quality.
