Come Dine With Me...no thanks

By Paul Fulford on May 9, 08 05:37 PM

Is there a worse cookery programme on television than Come Dine With Me?

I slumped in front of Channel 4 News and couldn't be bothered to get up to change channels when CDWM started.

It seems to me to be based on a collection of people who know little about food and who have limited ability as cooks but possess an endless (yet unfathomable) belief in their own importance and an endless desire to win the £1,000 prize.

Their dishes made the offerings of Ready Steady Cook seem like haute cuisine. Absolute rubbish.

Yes there is.

Great British Menu. Repetitive, arch, staged, contrived, misconceived.

Have to admit I quite like Great Britis Menu. I agree it sometimes disappoints, but there's some good cooking on there, too.

Oh Paul, Come Dine With Me isn't a cookery show really though is it? It's more about pretentious people being given enough culinary rope to hang themselves.

In spite of myself I find it unmissable. I know, I feel dirty. I did use a recipe from it once (for baked camembert - to be fair it probably came from the back of a supermarket cheese box!).

I was particularly impressed by the woman last week whose idea of a fun night out was the crawl home drunk. Classy lady...

Did you the see the one from Coventry a couple of weeks back? Very very funny indeed.

I think you should sign up for it Paul - it'd make a great topic for features and blog posts too and since you're always talking about exciting recipes you're making it'd be perfect!

I learned my lesson about cooking in public when I took part in a Gordon Ramsay masterclass at the Good Food Show at the NEC last year - cutting my fingers to pieces and making a complete mess of a pasta dish.
It was like Generation Game meets the Texas Chainsaw Massacre!

Just finished filming a week of this as a constestant in Stockport. Yeah I agree it most of us can't cook but it's isn't really about that. I had to submit my menu 3 times and ended up cooking a dish I'd never dones before. Best week of my life and met some grest new friend, except one. Look out for it Aug Sept

Glad you had a good time, Chris. I'll watch out for the episode.
