The Celebrity Generation and the Death of a Legend
'People would trample over each other just to catch a glimpse of a legend'
When the "news" and images of celebrities in the media consist of stories about their lives in glossy magazines, you may just think that everyone in the public eye automatically start marrying goats, drinking their own urine, and throwing phones at paparazzi - only to go home and have cocaine shovelled up their noses by a trio of burlesque dancers.
Seeing a celebrity walking down the street obviously means they're going to meet Meg Ryan for lunch and not just going to the supermarket, and therefore it should make national news. The sky is falling down, Gordon Brown has just declared war on South Wales, and a nuclear power station has just exploded, but Helen Mirren has just bought some new earrings so that is what, of course, makes the News at 10.
We seem to be living in a celebrity-obsessed society where celebrities have a huge influence on people's lives.
A product that could turn saliva into gold would be dismissed as ludicrous unless it's endorsed in an advert with Jane Fonda and then it's flying off the shelves.
But for all the superficial celebrity attention, there's a rare time when one person, can have such a dramatic effect across the globe.
You know you've made your mark on society and on the world when the news channels show images of people of all ages coming together on the streets to sing your songs, people wear a single white exfoliating glove in the shower in tribute, and people all over the planet are trying to moonwalk from the dinner table to the kitchen sink - even if they look like a giraffe with a bowel complaint trying to wipe gum off the bottom of their feet.
The high activity of social networking websites and text messages at 400,000 per second last Thursday evening meant that the news of Michael Jackson was all over the world within hours of his death. Even faster than on the news channels. After the vast surge in text messages, the viewing figures for the Sky and BBC News rocketed as people rushed to confirm if the news was true.
Believing all information received in a text message could be a risk with so many people texting hoaxes like the statue of liberty has come alive and is in the process of terrorising New York or Gordon Brown has gone rabid and has bitten a chunk out of Harriet Harman's ear while dressed as a Nazi.
But either one of these rumours would have been less shocking than hearing that a music legend had died. By 10.30pm, last Thursday, with the news circulating the planet, the news channels still hadn't caught up. You would probably expect no mention of Michael Jackson on BBC News - they usually drag their feet and check the facts before they make any hasty announcements. You would have expected Sky News to be slightly bolder and have quoted the news of his death from another source under a Breaking News headline. And you would expect Fox News, being American, to have seen a rumour on Twitter, which was good enough for them, and to be already holding a live séance in the studio.
The following day, people awoke to the confirmed news that Michael Jackson had died and those at Glastonbury emerged from their tents looking like Worzel Gummidge to the sound of tracks from Thriller, the world's fastest ever selling album. All over the country, news rooms were interviewing people who were lining up to say that they had met Michael Jackson - who had been to his concerts, stood next to him in a lift or was once sneezed on by the man himself back in 1984.
It was in the up and coming days that the focus changed from that of shock to a lament of a lifelong tragedy.
When images of his transformation from a child star to the 50-year-old, unconventional man that he had become appeared all over the news and on entertainment programmes, the words "misfortune", "pity", and "sadness" cropped up - and they were words that were used to describe the life of Michael Jackson on so many levels.
With mass moonwalks taking place, live re-enactments of the Thriller routine, and thousands of people of all ages meeting in the street to sing his songs across the globe, Michael Jackson has cemented his place in history as the world's foremost pop star who had become a living legend when he was still only a child.
Despite some of the negative opinions of him - distorted by the medium that is the sensational speculation from the media that, ultimately, contributed to his downfall - the fact that people idolised his music, would trample over each other just to catch a glimpse of a legend, and the vast number of tributes all over the world shows that he meant something to a lot of people.
And yet, already, there have been people criticising him and even criticising his fans for their mass tributes as though all of the attention is exaggerated. But it's a rarity that someone's talent is celebrated on such a large, international scale - especially for a performer who, in life, was a troubled perfectionist who would never be satisfied with himself and who heavily criticised his own circumstances - even without the media doing that for him.
For anyone who is not a fan of Michael Jackson, the fact that his work is an inspiration to many people should not be condemned.
Michael Jackson; with his unique style, being the ultimate live performer that broke all music records, created his own genre, performing from the age of 4; gave his whole life to entertaining others and trying to instil happiness into many people's lives. He has developed into an idol, a cultural phenomenon in life and in death. His lyrics and dance moves have become globally renowned, and his songs have become a soundtrack to the lives of multiple generations of people, and will be remembered like anthems that immortalise parts of history in people's minds like the ghosts of a long-gone summer.

I wondered if you were going to write about Michael Jackson. I wondered how you were going to tackle it if you did and I can only congratulate you for what you have done. I read many articles everyday and no one, and i mean no one pulls them off like you. For you to write about such a sensitive issue making sure you include enough for people who were fans and those who werent and to still add your trademark humour with the ability to get the message across so perfectly has bowled me over. I was on the verge of tears at the end of reading this at first from laughter and then of sadness. This definitely is the best one yet and i cant say how glad i am to have to opportunity to read it.
I don’t even feel like going saying my wahoo tonight. I don’t think ive read anything so sad in my life. I was shocked and saddened when i heard that mj had died but i have not until tonight shed a tear. This article is as funny as it is poignant and you handled it better than any wriring i have seen on Michael Jackson. MJ spent his life doing for others and the media have made up so many stories about him to make a couple of quid that they ruined his life and even now in death they are stil speculating and picking like scavengers at the life they ruined. Totally totally totally totally totally wicked man for more ways that you can ever imagine.
When i heard that Michael Jackson had died i cried in shock and now i after reading this i am crying with sadness. This would have to be one of the most hard hitting look at true talent and how the media ruin peoples likes by being sensational and yet in the same way it shows how we are obsessed with celebrity so much that we buy all the magazines and newspapers that destroy the lives of the people we idolise. And that is the saddest think i have ever read or thought about in my entire life. By buying those terrible magazines we are voting in favour of a superficial commercial society in which anyone with any real talent is mocked and made fun of. Michael Jackson has had to die for us to realise what type of society we are creating for ourselves. Thanks for the article. It was funny and sad and it has left me stunned.
Too right! I love Michael jackson!!! I can think of a few people who would have jumped in front of a bullet for him! When i read this is made me breakdown in tears so much i messed up my first comment. He has actually spent his whole life almost from the point of being born to entertain others and build that themepark for the kids. He has done so much for us by providing such beautiful music and some people have still turned against him and thrown it all back in his face. And i have even seen people on the television who have still criticised him. He was never convicted of anything and the media had better sort them selves out. Those bastards have ruined the life of one of the nicest possible men to ever walk this planet. He could not give enough and yet people have still knocked him down. This is a great article and you still managed to have some funny parts so for that i have to commend you! If only other people saw things like you this world would not be in such a mess.
I’ve always said that if you can make people laugh then you have mastered all emotions and that is definitely what you have done today. I can’t believe how some people have treated Michael jackson after all these years with those stupid rumours that was sleeping in an oxygen tent and all that. And even now he has died the media are still speculating as if they haven’t done enough to the poor man who gave the world his magnificent talent. When i look at the picture of him as a child it makes me cry as much as i cried just reading this article because if i could go back and tell him not to sing and perform i would because i don’t think people even deserved it...he gave his whole life to entertainment ...literally and i honestly think this world isn’t good enough for him. You were to good for this world mj. I hope you’re in a much better place.
I don’t even know what to say. I hadn’t really looked at it like that an ive always been a fan. I know people of all ages who loved Michael Jackson and to see those people doing mass moonwalks in the street makes me have goosepimples. The world is a much worse place without him. Perfect article on so many levels.
I've always been a fan of michael jackson. Me andmy brother used to dance in the living room to his music. I never ever cry in fact i don’t think i have cried since i was about 10 and yet here i am a fully grown man is tears. Dont tell my wife! You definateley have a way with words. I don’t know what else to say...
Literally as soon as Michael Jackson had died i thought of you. I wondered how you were going to handle it and it is better than i could ever have imagined. I’m not sure many people could have you laughing your head off at the start of an article and then crying your eyes out by the end. I have not felt so emotional for years. When Michael jackson i felt sad but the stuff you write about has made me cry for him as a person and his children who have been left without a father and also for the tragic way he spent his whole life performing and what little life he actually had to himself was him getting abuse from the press and accusing him of everything under the sun. Brilliant article. I thin im going to cry myself to sleep tonight.
Spending his whole life performing was a high price to pay but i cant imaging life without michael jackson. He is a legend and always will be. Who else in todays music indistry is going to do what he has done? Nothing. I think it's a shame how his father used to beat him and the tough childhood he had because its not like even now after his death his father even seems bothered. His father seems horrid. It was like michael jackson could never be good enough and if your own father tells you your ugly and your not good enough from when youre born how is that going to make you feel about yourself your whole life? When i say them taking out that body bag why heard sank and i felt sick. I still cant believe that he is dead and this article made me blubber like a baby. You truly are a great writer on every single level. I love the way you managed to have funny parts in there too. Who elso could marry the comedy with the respectful tragedy together other than you? Rest in peace michael jackson. I hope wherever you are your appreciated. We miss you.
After reading this i feel like my soul has been ripped out. In a good way if thats possible. Th eway you write is so powerful its untrue. So funny and yet so sad. I cried with laughter at the start and then broke down in tears for the second part. and then i watched him singing on the video and i doesnt seem real that hes dead. After hearing him sing about about changing ourselves before we can change others i think it was very fitting as people should stop the way they judge others through reading magazine gossip and not makea judgement until you meet comeone face to face. I would have loved to meet michaal jackson. it all seems to sad. RIP Michael Jackson.
i always say you catch me off guard and youve done it again in a totally different way. I have just sat and cried for nearly half an hour after reading this. His life is a tragic story and reading this has taught me to never believe ANYTHING i read in the news again. isnt it funny how people who may have even been fans of michael jackson hav bought into his downfall by buying all the taty news? I cant stop crying. I love the way you write, i am going to read it again slowly when i stop crying. I don't think i have ever loved anyone who i have never met as much as michael jackson.
What amazing writing! I will never forget my childhood listening to michael jackson and i even love all of his later songs. Each one means so much and the words and the dancing and the rhythm is amazing. I dont think i have ever met anone who didnt like at least one michael jackson song. I must say like some other on here i have not cried in years or even when i heard he had died but not after reading this and the way it puts everything in perspective is amazing. Isnt it funny as human nature we spend our lives pulling people apart and always focusing on the negative in people, holding grudges and not just waking up every day to be glad. I watched his interview with oprah again the other day and it reminded me what a lovely person he was and how he tried to do so much for people and then people went and accused him of things he neved did and that must have put him under huge amounts of stress. I think many people have taken advantage of him in many different ways. Michael Jackson is my idol and always will be. I hope we meet some day.
Wow. No one has made me cry for years and years. Trust you to go and ruin my record. ha ha! This is an amazing article. I think its amazing how no matter how he tried to do thigs for people and help people and some people still accused him of things he never ever got bitter and he still kept giving. I admire him for that. I like how in the song he says about never closing your mind to things and not getting bitter and resentful and give in. always keep trying. he was a great philospher as well as a wicked singer and dancer. He will never die to those of us who admire his music.
Sky News did go with the breaking news line that TMZ was reporting the death of Michael - and it did so WAY ahead of the BBC, which as always would only go with the story after more mainstream news organisations and wire services covered it.
RIP MICHAEL JACKSON and this is one of the best articles i have read on him.
I will never forget the first time i saw thriller or the black or white video but not only that I will never forget the man himself michael we love u
How could we forget you!
Michael,how could you leave us!
