October 2011 Archives

HAVE you worked out yet how to make a great film that last less than 180 seconds.

If so, now is your BIG chance to shine on the world stage...

THE new replacement screen for the old IMAX cinema in Millennium Point is being fitted today.

It arrived from Canada like a roll of carpet, but was so big it had to be dropped in through a hatch in the roof of a venue that will now be officially known as The Giant Screen at Millennium Point.

Eighteen people will unrolled and lay the screen out upside down over the top of all of the venue's brand new seats.

Then a team will use ropes to pull it to the top of a new frame.

It will be attached to the frame and kept in position using specially made springs which mean that if there are any changes in temperature in the auditorium, it won't crease or stretch too far.

With the whole projecting costing $60,000 there's no room for error.

But a top team lead by worldwide screen fitting expert Bobby Franklin means it should all be plain sailing.

Famous last words, but the first major public screenings of the new 4K digital projector system are set to be be from Wednesday, October 26 when Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin will open.
