MORGAN SPURLOCK - THE DAY I RAN FOR MY LIFE

FILMMAKER Morgan Spurlock was great value at Broad Street Cineworld tonight.

He'd travelled up specially from London to talk about his new movie, Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? (12A) which opens at the cinema this Friday when I'll be reviewing it in the Birmingham Mail.

The 37-year-old comdes from a small town in West Virginia, but the Oscar-nominated Super Size Me director discussed how he was in New York on the day of the Twin Towers' attack which was to spawn the idea for the movie.

"When the second plane hit the Towers I was on the phone to my (now) wife Alexandra in Brooklyn," said Morgan.

"She said she didn't know what was happening. I was in a car about six miles from home and we were stuck.

"So I just got out and ran all the way back home."

Morgan said he thought it was right that President Bush had gone into Afghanistan, but felt that 'more troops should have been sent to finish the job'.

As for the US Election, he felt that Republican candidate John McCain would win a national vote tomorrow if one were called.

He thought the rivalry between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama could damage the Democrats' challenge whoever wins the leadership contest.

His film shows him firing an old rocket propelled grenade towards a montain side - so didn't this 'awesome' act glamourise the sort of violence he was effectively campaigning against?

"It was like being a little boy again," he said. "Who wouldn't want to fire an RPG if they had the chance?

"I don't think it glamourises violence because I was only firing it against a mountainside - my biggest worry was whether it would blow up next to me when I fired it."

I've done a lot of these Q&As and Morgan was as pleasant a guest as we've ever had, really down to earth but very bright and passionate, too.

It was really good to see him chatting to fans afterwards before he shot off back to London to be reunited with his wife, Alexandra, and their 16-month-old son, Laken.
