MARTIN SCORSESE - UNLUCKY AGAIN!
It's not every weekend there's a Martin Scorsese premiere to look forward to, but on Sunday, April 20 fans shouldn't miss The Aviator showing at 9pm on BBC2.
It earned Leonardo DiCaprio a deserved best actor nomination and, running to 170 minutes in cinemas, was a good test of the seat you were sitting in.
The Howard Hughes biopic went on to garner 11 Oscar nominations, winning five for Best Achievement in Cinematography (Robert Richardson), Costume Design (Sandy Powell), Editing (Thelma Schoonmaker) and Actress in a Supporting Role (Cate Blanchett, brilliant as Katharine Hepburn who's still the star with the most best actor / actress Oscar wins - four, from an amazing 12 nominations).
Unlucky Scorsese, of course, had to sit back while his regular collaborator Thelma Schoonmaker picked up her second Oscar (after Raging Bull).
A year ago Thelma won her third Oscar (from six career nominations) for The Departed - and even Marty finally broke his duck at the sixth attempt in the best director category.
Given that she won her first nod in 1971 for editing Woodstock, the big surprise this year is that Thelma didn't do the honours on Scorsese's current release Shine A Light.
But the pair will be back in harness soon on other new dramas, including next year's Shutter Island which will again star Leonardo DiCaprio.
