J R R TOLKIEN - MUSEUM CLOSER THANKS TO MEXICO'S GUILLERMO DEL TORO?
WHAT wonderful news that J R R Tolkien's book The Hobbit is set to be turned into a major movie by my favourite foreign director, Guillermo Del Toro.
Films already directed by the brilliant 43-year-old Mexican include The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth.
This summer he'll be releasing action sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army and he also produced recent sensational Spanish shocker The Orphanage - the best spooky movie for at least five years.
As well as making The Hobbit, Del Toro will also be making another movie currently titled The Hobbit 2 back-to-back just like The Lord of the Rings trilogy itself...
The Hobbit sequel will provide a direct link to bridge the 60-year gap between The Hobbit and the multi-Oscar winning The Lord of the Rings trilogy - whose director, Peter Jackson, will be one of the executive producers.
When he released The Fellowship of the Ring, Jackson told me he'd never been to Moseley Bog.
So that's a good measure of how brilliant his imagination is, never mind Del Toro's.
Putting these two brains together should be dynamite!
Since Tolkien used to live on the Wake Green Road, everyone in Moseley should raise a glass of wine to Del Toro and Jackson as they strive to keep alive OUR heritage.
And think long and hard about turning part of Sarehole Mill into a proper museum dedicated to the author's work along the lines of the award-winning Roald Dahl Museum in Bucks.
LOTR grossed billions of dollars and won a shed load of Oscars.
Now, Del Toro is apparently willing to move to New Zealand for FOUR years to work on this double Hobbit project.
How much more evidence do Brummies need that there would be worldwide interest in a decent Tolkien museum?

And look out for Peter Jackson's next directorial project, currently slated for released in March, 2009.
Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz and Susan Sarandon will star in The Lovely Bones, the haunting story of a murdered girl in Heaven who watches her family breaking up.
Based on the novel by Alice Sebold, it's been shot in both New Zealand and the US. Can't wait!

Ye gods! Another film based on another book by the vastly overrated Tolkien? Spare us that...please!
JRRT's works are overwritten banal tosh.
The LOTR was described as 'The book of the century' but, you're right, I certainly wouldn't want to be stuck on a desert island with it.
The DVD trilogy would be much more acceptable as you could spend most of your waking hours watching the films which captured worldwide attention in a way that Birmingham hasn't bothered to capitalise on in return.
Enterprising souls could also use the discs to fillet fish or as makeshift sun reflectors in a bid to attract attention once you are ready to leave.
