SAVE ENERGY AND CUT COSTS AT HOME

By Esther Boyd on May 1, 09 11:01 AM

A good way to get motivated to make energy saving improvements at home is to visit a home where energy use has been cut by 70 per cent. You can then see for yourself what the energy saving measures look like, learn how effective they are, learn how much they cost and what grants are available.

John Newson has achieved this energy reduction at his house in Birmingham:
32 Alder Road,
Balsall Heath,
B12 8BS.

He is holding an Open Weekend on
Saturday, 16th May 2 to 4 pm and
Sunday, 17th May 2 to 4pm.

John invites you to visit his house, to learn how he has reduced his energy use. He hopes that you will be inspired to act to save energy in your home. John offers to help house owners to create their own energy masterplan. With interest rates so low, energy saving measures may now give the best return on savings.

John lives in a Victorian end-of-terrace house, a type of house which is considered to be "hard-to-treat" to achieve energy reductions. If you live in a modern house, with insulated cavity walls and an insulated loft, there are still measures at 32 Alder Road, that can be applied to any house, that you can learn from. For instance John's water bill is down by £80 a year.

This Open Weekend is part of a national programme of openings by the 'Old Home Superhome' network, run by the
Sustainable Energy Academy.

Please book by email:
john@bham12.orangehome.co.uk
saying when you would like to come and how many people you will bring. Visits need to be spread across the hours available due to the size of the house and, for those who must drive to get there, due to limited on street parking spaces.

I strongly recommend that you take this opportunity to see how energy bills can be reduced. I have been inspired by my visits to 32 Alder Road.

I have seen John's house on a previous occasion he opened it and it is well worth seeing especially if you live in an older house where cavity insulation cannot be used.

At the Open Days of my Low Energy House we will have several types of wall insulation and loft insulation to look at. Martin Normanton from the Walsall Ecohouse will be here and sharing his knowledge and experience.

This is an interesting post. I wrote a blog post also on this, eco homes.

Learning about saving energy and money is relevant, especially in today's society. It will also give people the chance to see how they can do this in a variety of different ways.
