Twice in the past couple of days I have been driving along minding my own business when I have found a cyclist on the wrong side of the road, in one case on a dual carriageway at night without lights, coming towards me.

Add to this the number of times cyclists ignore traffic lights and road signs, ride though pedestrian areas and even go the wrong way around traffic islands and perhaps you can see a pattern emerging.

Now I have no objection to cyclists on our roads as long as they play by the same rules as everyone else -whatever happened to the cycling proficiency test?

Let us start by having a basic cycling test to ride on the roads, then compulsory insurance and road tax. Next ban the riding of bikes on pavements, crossings and pedestrian areas. If you are not on the road - walk and if you are on the road obey the same rules, lights, signs and signals as everyone else or suffer the consequences.

And before the sandals, beards and cords brigade splutter into their bean and lentil cassolet and start their holier than thou whining - show a bit of respect for drivers and pedestrians and they might, just might, show a little for you.
