What about hacking off the bankers?

By Roger Clarke on Nov 10, 11 05:22 PM

Much as I enjoy the spectator sport of watching the Murdochs and their empire being prodded with pointed sticks by MPs shouldn't we get this into perspective?

The News of the World and so on were engaged in illegal activities and if the police had done a half decent job first time round all this would have long been over.

It might have been shameful but no one died, no one was hurt, no one suffered loss or injury. Crimes were committed and charges are being brought yet MPs are still after the Murdochs and their papers like a demented Jack Russell with a bone.

Contrast that with the banking system. The Eurozone is in crisis, people have lost jobs, homes and businesses, we face austerity for years, people are denied pay rises and even have to take pay cuts and all because of the banks and the way they ran things - including hiding the extent of the Greek debt.

Apart from a few warnings of dire consequences sometime comfortably in the distant future if the banks don't mend their ways what has happened?

The banks, even the ones we own, are still paying out huge bonuses. They are still dealing in dodgy financial instruments, still gambling with, in the case of some of them, taxpayer's money and the rules and regulations governing them have to all intents and purposes not changed one jot.

Yet our MPs think it is much more important to jump up and down about a case which is already subject to a police inquiry and will be heading to court than to hold the bankers to any sort of account.

What the Murdoch empire did was wrong and they should pay. What the bankers did was diabolical and we are all paying and will be for years.
