No news is bad news at Sainsbury's

By Roger Clarke on Dec 10, 09 02:25 PM

Saninbury's Mere Green has apparently decided it no longer wants to sell newspapers. Anyone visiting the store can find the island display, if they search hard enough. It is pushed against the wall by the entrance, behind a pillar and just to make it that bit more inaccessible it is between two security barriers which make it just about as difficult as possible to get to and if you are elderly and a bit doddery . . forget it.

I did complain when the mad idea was first tried out and again when it became a permanent feature a couple of Sundays back when I was told I was the 12th person to complain so far that day not counting complaints to the cigarette kiosk which, being nearest the news stand was taking the brunt of the moans - and there was still more than half a day to go. It annoyed me so much I now refuse to buy any newspapers there.

The complaints, I understamd, continue but the store management don't take a blind bit of notice so as they don't seem to want to sell newspapers to their customers could I suggest that we go along with this policy. Until Sainsbury's put their news stand back where people can get to it we should all help them achieve their objective by no longer buying our newspapers there.

Keep up to date
