What i's it about apo'strophe's?

Perhaps if the Department for Transport or People's Directorate for Highways or whatever they call themselves these days do manage to bring in yet another level of swingeing taxes under the laughable guise of congestion charges - the modern equivalent of highway robbery - they could use some of the ill gotten gains to educate their staff in some of the basics of what is supposed to be their mother tongue.

If you look at their large yellow signs they seem to be under the impression that the letter S has to have an apostrophe added if it appears at the end of a word. If you use the acronym HGV for Heavy Goods Vehicle then the plural is HGVs. HGV's is a different animal completely and makes a nonsense of the whole sign.

Not that they are alone. You would think that with the amount of cash Tesco coins in each year it would be able to afford marketing staff with at least a vague familiarity with literacy but no, the grocery giant is regularly advertising CD's and DVD's. CD's what or DVD's what they fail to say.

Still under New Labour we have the finest education system in the world - as long as you don't have to write about it in English that is.
