The Kid's got Swine Flu! (But he's not having the Tamiflu)

By Laura Yates on Nov 24, 09 06:12 PM

I know what you're thinking - you're thinking that I'm one of those alarmist parents who Googled 'TAMIFLU SIDE-EFFECTS' and got scared by every worst-case-scenario that popped up. Not at all. I do not base important parental decisions on what I read on the internet. Oh no. I use the here-say that circulates the school playground.

A good few fellow mothers heard that Tamiflu could make children feel worse than the actual Swine Flu virus. The paranoid murmurings of a handful full of mums was all I needed to hear...

Of course I'm not being serious. I didn't give The Kid Tamiflu, but not because of the bad press some people have been giving it.

He was diagnosed on Wednesday. I'd taken him to the doctors because I thought he had a chest infection; he'd been coughing and had a high temperature since Tuesday.

Considering I've been so worried about The Kid contracting the dreaded Swine Flu, you'd have thought I'd have suspected he had it before he went to the doctors. I was totally shocked when she diagnosed him, and we got told off for bringing him to the surgery, although she did understand we genuinely didn't know he had it.

Thing was, we couldn't collect the Tamiflu till Thursday afternoon, by which point his temperature had gone down and his cough seemed to be abating.

I have to admit I lean against giving medication to my children unless it's absolutely necessary anyway. I think if a child can battle illness on their own it is much better for their immune systems.

So, I decided to give it till Friday. If he was any worse I would administer the drug. Friday arrived and he was so much better, I just couldn't see the point of giving him a dose of chemicals when he was fighting the virus on his own.

Now I feel he will be better equipped to deal with other illnesses, maybe even another strain of Swine Flu if he comes into contact with it.

I'm with you 100 percent, no unnecessary drugs.

Not like that American couple, whose seriously ill daughter died because they prayed for her instead of taking her to the hospital, but in this case why medicate a condition that's getting better?

The whole swine flu thing leaves me feeling very confused.

Ah, thanks you lot! Had a few emails too; yes we're all good thanks. (Just about!) There's been plenty going on which I shall write about in the coming days/weeks.
With regard to the question re whether the swine vaccine is an annual thing, one would imagine that it would be (because the normal flu jab is). Thing is normal flu jab isn't given to children routinely (only vulnerable people) and now they're saying that the swine type isn't any worse than normal flu, why give kids the jab? I just don't know what to do about it.. I have to say I'm leaning towards not giving it to him and even if I did I don't think I'd want to get him vaccinated every year. Also, if he's already had the swine isn't that equivalent to having a vaccination anyway? I know lots of Brummie mums who have opted to have the jab, such as Chopper who is very glad it's done and Tombo is now armed against the swine and the complications that go with it.
So many questions! I shall do some research and write a blog about it very soon.
Cheers for all of the comments and concerns.
