Stoodi Bakers Reunion 3rd May 2009

By Laura Yates on May 2, 09 09:57 PM

Is it me, or is clubbing just not what it used to be? Give me a choice of trying to get a taxi at 3am whilst fighting through swathes of people who, about 6 months ago were below the age of consent , or being safe and warm in my bed, I know where I'd rather be. Has clubbing itself changed beyond all recognition, or did I just get old?

Yup - when people ask me if I want to go to one of Broad Street's faceless bars to listen to music so new I've never heard it before I promptly make my excuses. Then I heard that Stoodi Bakers is returning for just one night. It's at the old Stoodi's building (now Miskas) on Sunday the 3rd of May. I have to say I'm sorely tempted.

Ten years ago there was no place like it, and perhaps it's the great Stoodi's atmosphere that's spoiled me. My initial clubbing experiences were in a venue so fantastic that nothing else can compare - any other clubs I visit could only fall short.

If you go out on Broad Street now the place is packed with bars all much of a muchness, punctuated by the occasional strip club, stretch limo and countless hen and stag dos. Same old, same old. It's getting to be like Blackpool without the Pleasure Beach. Not tomorrow night though. A bit of the past will be brought back for a precious few hours. Stoodi Bakers, make some noise!

Fair enough, we live in Britain's beautiful second city; there's always something happening; always a gig or show, always a reunion, always a bar opening - but the opportunity to relive a night in Birmingham's most prestigious night club may well be a once in a life-time experience for us all.

It's not some fresh-out-the-gate DJ jumping on the Stoodi's bandwagon trying to make a name for his or herself in a new, trendy bar that will be closed by this time next year. It's 100% Stoodi Bakers in every way.

The original management team has worked hard to put the original building back to its original condition. It will be every inch the amazing night out it was all those years ago - the reunion promises to be a memorable event, offering the complete package that all Stoodi's regulars will remember from the pyrotechnics and laser light show to the dancers and music, which is prepared by Ian B, the original DJ. ALL old stuff, nothing current.

It's not a load of past it people trying to cling on to their youth. Just because you've had kids doesn't mean that you can't go and enjoy the things you did in your when you were younger.. especially when those things only happen once in a blue moon. And you have to admit it would be nice to go somewhere not crowded with people so young they need to get an early night for school the following day.

I really feel that we have to take these chances when we get them, otherwise we'll leave it so long we'll be ancient before we decide to go out and enjoy ourselves; it will be like the episode of the Simpsons when the elderly people try and reclaim the streets while the rest of town is under curfew.

If you're thinking about it, if you're even slightly tempted, just do it - none of us are getting any younger and you might not get this chance again.
