Girls are better than boys.

Another simple thing to do over the hols is get together with other families with kids - that's what we did yesterday. We took our brood to the family Hamel-Shaw's, which is great as the amount of kids we have between us more or less occupy themselves.

The best thing about the family Hamel-Shaw is the conversation. When we got past the fact that I got my hall stairs and landing fully plastered for just £150, we talked about things such as self-guided weaning, gender stereo-typing, whether to have more children and what breed of child it's better to have: Girls, or boys?

I discovered that girls are better than boys. Fact. It's true - I never thought I'd say that; I've always firmly believed the gender of babies doesn't matter especially after having two gorgeous boys. Yet after two hours in the company of Laura and the family Hamel-Shaw I saw it from a completely different point of view.

Girls are easier to raise than boys. Girls can be who they want to be, what they want to be, when they want to be it. You can have a trouser wearing tom-boy, or a perfect princess. Teach her to be anything from an honest human-rights lawyer, a shrewd entrepreneur or a stay at home mom.

Boys have to everything. There is such pressure on parents to raise a lad who likes sports and scrapping but also one who is nice to other kids and uses manners at all times. We must create a son who is manly but tender; strong and capable of fighting for his family, but able to be caring and sensitive to the needs of others.

I've heard parents of daughters talk about how difficult they have it - all that worry about future boyfriends and teenage pregnancy. That's nothing compared to the burden of social responsibility that comes with trying to raise a perfect, all round well balanced 21st century modern man.

Do you think that children are predetermined to act in a certain way depending on whether they're male or female? Check Alphamummy out - they've been talking about whether boys are naturally violent. It's really interesting stuff.

Oh, and hello to Laura's mom, Delyth Francis!
