Ebaby!
Why do people spend so much money on babies at Christmas? There must be some kind of emotional feeling attached to actually buying the gifts and seeing them under the tree because any child under two just isn't capable of appreciating lots of expensive, brand new presents.
Two days after Christmas I checked Facebook and found there'd already been a deluge of photos added of people's kids (and more importantly their presents) on Christmas morning.
There were photos of toddlers staring blankly at piles of pretty presents, then more photos of them continuing to stare blankly as the presents were unwrapped on their behalf. The blank stares didn't alter as expensive gifts were waved under their noses.
How would you feel as a parent having spent in some cases hundreds of pounds on your kids, only for them to wander off and start pulling baubles off the tree? Mortified I should imagine, but it won't stop the same farce of an affair happening next year.
On some of the photos I saw children as young as three getting Nintendo DS's - they weren't the children of rich parents either. Credit Crunch my arse. Why is it that people have to throw themselves into a pile of debt before they feel they've provided a good Christmas?
When you have very young kids take advantage of the fact they're not in the slightest bit bothered how much something costs or where you got it from. You can get small, simple gifts and still have a great time.
I spent a grand total of £15 on The Kid this Christmas, and in retrospect that was £10 too much. I bought three sets of Little People care of Ebay and he only played with one of those on Christmas morning. He was more excited by the fact he was getting to eat chocolate before breakfast.. actually that was one of my highlights too!
I'm not the only one who thinks this; I've canvassed the opinions of many mothers over the last two months and found that lots of them are cottoning on to Ebay as a way of getting great gifts.
Looks like 2009 might be the year of the 'Ebaby', and what's wrong with that?

A lot of young kids/babies will tell you (if they could) that it's playing with toys that aren't your own that is the buzz, not getting shiny boxed brand new ones.
With this in mind, ebay and charity shops are great places to spend very little and make a child's day very happy indeed.
Can't say we've done the same though, but most of our family have bought Josh stuff and we've taken advantage of that. There's three things still here that I know we'll be able to wheel out in a few months time that he'll love!
