ill Bill Volume 1

By Laura Yates on Nov 27, 08 10:23 PM

I decided against walking into A&E and setting up camp until an expert paediatrician came to see The Kid. I thought that I'd have one more try at explaining to the Doctor just how bad he is.

Despite cutting out milk from his diet he continues to have diarrhoea. I've been to the docs several times and all they've done is given me a number to call and arrange a hospital appointment. Every time I call there is nothing available.

At the end of my tether I bagged a nasty nappy that The Kid dutifully produced that morning and set off for the Doctors.

I'm sure she took one look at the very happy kid and his portly belly marching merrily around her office and decided there was nothing wrong with him at all.

"It's very common for babies of this age to have loose stools." She said. "If he's gaining weight and happy enough then I'm sure all is well."

"Yeah, I know, but it's all the time.. sometimes ten times a day." I didn't want to come across as a neurotic parent, but I also didn't want to get fobbed off again.

"Yes, it will take a while for things to settle down with babies."

"It's been six months. I know he looks fine, but when it's bad it soaks through his clothes, my clothes, his bed sheets. I just know that something isn't right."

She sighed patiently. "It really is perfectly normal at this stage for babies..."

It was at this point that I opened the nappy. "Is this normal?"

There was a pause.

"Okay I'll arrange an appointment directly from here. How's the 7th of January?"

This is the first, and I suspect the last time I shall be glad about having on my person a dirty nappy filled with pooh.
