Will My Will Be Done?

By Laura Yates on Sep 17, 08 09:01 PM

Nothing brings home our own mortality than producing a new life. Since having children my thoughts about shuffling off this mortal coil have altered significantly. I just wish I could say the same for my significant other.

It's all a bit morbid, but I've done the sensible thing and made a Will - and it's a good job too. I have failed on numerous occasions to seriously talk to The Other Half about what I want to happen when I've popped my clogs.

Whenever I broach the subject I am curtly informed that I shall be going over the back fence. No fuss. No bother. Just a quick ceremonial leg and a wing into the garages while The Boy gives his rendition of the Emmerdale theme tune. Then, it's back inside for some scotch eggs and a game of Side Pocket on the Mega Drive.

I should like to be cremated. I say solemnly - to which I'm told that I shall be set on fire, before my still burning remains are tossed out of the back garden.

I'd all but given up. I thought my request for my ashes to be scattered on moving water might bring the conversation back to reality.

I shall get my wish. I am to be swept up and flushed down the bog.

Ha ha, great stuff Laura. I often worry about whether I should make a will but as I have no dependents it seems rather pointless.

But I worry about where my CD collection will go (at least 900 albums, hundreds more singles) and in particular my prized Radiohead collection. What happens if it all ends up in the hands of someone whose favourite Beatles album is "The Best Of The Beatles".

Who cares? This was a deadly dull read.

Deadly dull read....can't have been that bad if you actually took the time to read it and futhermore how big of you to make such a rude comment and not even leave a name...tut tut.

I think that it's commendable that Laura has made a will, after all who knows what is around the corner, how terrible for a loved one ot have to make all them decisions on their own - she has now done it for her other half.
This article is both serious but amusing at the same time, lets see what you can do.

Laura - keep on blogging i'm intruiged.
Got me thinking.....who's going to get my cd collection!!!

Anyhooo well done you!

Well done Laura! I think making a will is really hard work but if you die without one - you make life extra hard for those you leave, for whom life is probably hard enough already...so it's really worth the effort. If only more people wrote about it maybe fewer people would die intestate so glad you're bringing this topic up!
BG
PS please can you leave me your collection of gold coins?

I find it amusing that the only person to write a rude comment is the only person to not leave their name.

It's a big thing to write a Will so well done Laura, i hope your blog encourages others to do so!

Well i think that the 'deadly dull' must have come from someone who has never had to think about such things in life. Personally i found their comment rude and unnecessary. The blog entry to be insightful and amusing. I rarely get a serious answer to serious questions either Laura and i have to think it's because they just can't bare the thought of losing us hey!! I know that my single brother has requested that his best friend goes and removes the 'adult material' he has lurking around in his bottom drawers before our mother has to come in discover it!!! Men!!!
Ignore the obviously very brave comment made by 'anon', you can't please everyone all the time. I believe it to be yet another brilliant blog entry.

Dull?

I actually thought this was the funniest one yet!

Perhaps the caterpillars could go with you at the same time!

I agree, making a will is an important thing to do, but who on earth would I leave my children to? have you included that in yours?

p.s. fab blog - we love it!

Wow! I'm actually amazed by the amount of people who have felt so strongly about this blog they've felt they wanted to comment.
Yes, It's really important for everyone to make a will, especially when they've got dependants.
Lisa - I think you and your sis are old enough now not to worry about living with your ex-stepdad, although I wonder how he'd feel about all of you moving in with your new families!
BG - All of my gold is buried in a large field in Wythall. I'm sure it'll all get built on by Bovis eventually, so if you hang round whenever there's a digger about you're bound to get something.
Laura - I'll have your kids. Might sell them on for a profit though.
Josephine and Gurdo - I'll have your CDs.
Everyone else - thanks for the comments!!

Deadly dull read Anon, clearly not otherwise you wouldn't of bothered to type a reply.
This is definitley a good thought, as we are so wrapped uo in what we can get out if life we never really see past what will happen after we are gone. We don't really want to leave our loved ones to clean up the messy bills after we go now do we ? ..

I thought this was fab. Rather echoed my own sentiments actually. Must really make my will official now Girly is here (and has been for 5 months). Great work Laura, you've got us thinking.

PS Whereabouts in Wythall is that gold, my shovel is primed and ready to go...
