What a weaner!

By Victoria Farncombe on Jun 9, 08 11:38 AM

Went for a weaning talk the other day and had one of those moments when other mums puzzle me.

As the health visitor talked us through the rudiments of introducing our little ones to solids - no jarred food, no chillies, no crisps - all I could think was, My my, what an enormous faff.

Fancy going to all the trouble of steaming and mashing a carrot only for it to be hurled about the kitchen floor (apparently v.important to allow children to 'explore' their food).

At the end of the session, expecting much eye rolling and huffing from the other mums, I turned to my friend to have a good moan but was stopped in my tracks. Her eyes were glowing and she was manically fastening ___ into his pram.

"Isn't it EXCITING?" she said. "I'm going to start right now!"

.

And then she was off. Off to buy up all the ice-cube trays from Woollies with which to freeze her pureed creations.

"I've already started," confided the woman to my left. "I know you're supposed to wait until they're six months old but I just couldn't!"

"Me too!" cried another. "___ loves sweet potato and pear."

And so it went on.

Outwardly I nodded my head and murmured agreement: Mmm, so exciting; Six months can't come quick enough; Sweet potato and pear? How exotic! But inside I was screaming: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

Then later I felt a bad mother. These were clearly good women who were looking forward to their children discovering the joys of food. It was only me who was selfishly dreading all the steaming, mashing and mopping that lay ahead.

Am I alone?

ing amazing I have just weaned my little boy , they say no way should you before 17 weeks but i started at 15 I had to as he was starving all the time ( he was born 10lb 3 oz and always has had a huge appetite)! Anyway there is a blender by beaba babycook that steams, blends , defrosts , reheats all in one its so easy!! I was dreading having to wrestle with a steamer blender and other bits if kitchen hardware but this has made it so easy!! Go buy one NOW you can get them at jo jo mama bebe and larger mothercares! £65 is pricey but a life saver i would say!!
