The first date

By Victoria Farncombe on May 11, 08 08:48 PM

I have a date, a mum date! The text came late Thursday evening when I was sitting round the kitchen table eating my fifth slice of chocolate cake that day. Beep! "Hey Vicky, fancy meeting for lunch next Thur/ Fri? x"

OMG. It's her! It's her! It's my favourite mum from mums group. Giddy with excitement I rushed into the living room to show hubby the text.

"That mum I like's invited me for lunch," I squealed. "Look! What shall I write back? Shall I text back straightaway or leave it a few minutes? I don't want to look too keen."

Now in ordinary circumstances my husband may have been worried that I was excessively excited about meeting a woman for lunch. But after Tuesday, when he came home from work to find me sobbing on the sofa, 'I'm so lonely, I HATE being a mum. I hate it. I'm going back to work,' he's only too happy to push me into the arms of another person.

So, I texted back and we're meeting on Friday. Walk in the park, then lunch. Now all I need to decide is what to wear!

Are other new mums this sad and desperate or is it just me?

You are brilliant and you're easily the most entertaining Mother I know. For some reason, I can't post comments on here with my new name but I just wanted to say roll on June 4th x

It is something that most parents suffer from. That is unless you are very lucky and an already close friend is in the same circumstances, then you can act in a pair which is a better starting social point.

As a single man doing the job I think it can be more difficult, as I worry that trying to arrange an innocent play date for the children can be misinterpreted as a 'pass'.

As times gone on, I've stopped worrying about it, and the result is I've had two little treasures playing here today, and my social circle is increasing via my child at a decent rate.
