How many Muslims in Britain?
Go on have a guess.... After Christianity and Atheism, its the largest religion in the UK...
Now when I asked educated people in Sutton Coldfield this a few years ago as part of a week long survey that was being done, the average figure was around 15%. Some particularly well educated fellows put the figure as high as 40% - but they were just special.
Well, sorry to disappoint, but its only a whopping 3% of the population, or in real terms - 2m of the 67m folks that we share this green and pleasant land with.
Great news from Home Secretary Jacqui Smith then, when she confirmed last week that they're not all benefit scrounging bomb toting parasites and have contributed over £3bn to the national economy in the last 12 months alone. On top of that, they are also harbouring over 10,000 millionaires in their midst. I am still trying to smoke them out to interest them in funding the Muslim Writers Awards 2009, but I think it will take special branch to find this lot...
Having said that though, Birmingham's has its fare share of these millionaires and I must admit, with only a few exceptions, they are a thoroughly good bunch. Its easy to criticise and say they could do more, but they do seem to be trying to play their part and plan a long game to really impact the communities around them.
You could at this point accuse me of just a tad bit of bias as I'm knocking their doors for dosh....but really! Me? Biased? I'm about as objective, detached and irreverent as they come...can't buy my love sir.
Unless of course you are reading this, have lots of spare cash, a big heart and you want to fund the Muslim Writers Awards 2009....
Just kidding... We are actually in the rather enviable position of having to fight off funders and choose who we want! Interestingly though, none of them are Muslim owned businesess!

According the Islamic tradition, for anyone to be classified as a Muslim, they must declare their belief in the Shahadah - that is, one God (Allah) and the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him). If an accurate survey was done nationwide to record who believes in this concept, one may find the figure is larger than 2 million. For instance, it would be interesting to know whether that number includes those belonging to denominations including Shi'ite, Ahmadiyya, Wahabbi, etc, and whether contributions from members of these different persuasions within Islam would be considered and accommodated by organisers of the Muslim Writers Award.
Are you sure that 3% is correct ? because your muslim community cause's more than 3% worth of the U K's problem's , how many of that 3% are anti britain? you also say thay Moazam Begg is a Brummie ,sorry but he is not . I could go on all day but the truth will only changed into it being racist remark's us true Brummie's cant win and you know it , will this be printed ? I doubt it!

and what of the VAST majority of muslims trying to quietly lead their lives, who don't subscribe to the views of the above mentioned, who feel under siege and under attack by the press, who feel tarred with the same brush, who are sick of seeing muslims on the news, who want to be left alone by the likes of the Daily Mail or The Sun who have made these issues into a 'muslim' problem as opposed to labelling these people as CRIMINALS, the same papers who have taken it upon themselves to tell the country what to think on any given subject(muslim or non-muslim)to which a worrying large proportion of the british public (with very lazy minds) is very receptive?
23 May........another 'good'? Muslim Mohammed Hussain reported in the Mail driving illegally is this bad press or the truth? Muslim bomber's in Portsmouth , Muslim child neglect at it's very worst are these all negative report's ? , trouble is the Muslim community DOESN'T like the truth , even the respected Muslim boxer's cannot drive within the law ( that's British law ) but does the Muslim community respect or even believe in British justice , I remember not so long ago that they called themselves 'British Muslim's' but this seems not be used now why? I want to reply to all those commenting on British Muslims allegedly being "terrorists" and "criminals". Firstly what ever happened to innocent till proven guilty, it seems that tabloids seem to openly name anyone that gets raided as a terrorist when a few weeks later they might get released without charge, however their name is tarnished forever and them getting released without charge is never on the front page.
Also I would like to comment on Tony's remarks on " British Muslim Boxers who can't abide by the driving laws" ...come on grow up! All celebrities and superstars break the law, haven't YOU read in the papers about stars from all backgrounds who break the law! And about the Muslim businesses, let me ask you after your night out in Brum more than likely who will be your taxi driver, who runs the late-night takeaways, indian restaurants (that I might point out is one of the nations favourite food, who runs the 24 hour petrol stations for everybody's convenience.
Tony Beckford - I'd like to point out that many people are breaking the law everyday. This is something that has to be condenmed who ever they are, but to label a criminal in the same context as their religion or belief is unheard of if you are Christian, Hindu, atheist or even secularist. Some tiny % of Muslims may be doing wrong but you shouldn't label all Muslims as criminals, especially the large proportion in this country who are actually law abiding citizens.
well, why is %12 of our prison population muslim?
over 2million supposed people and a national attendance of 67,000,000 people, this surely must explain why british people, in general hate muslims, they are uncommunicative, unfriendly, ignorrant, and quite bluntly thick people that do not belong here! %3 population, and %12 prison population spaeaks for itself.

3% , well they must be living in Pollokshields, no white face here.and hardly any English spoken in shops. They rule the roost feel like an immigrant in my own city..............
