Villa's brave face of Christmas

By Steve Dyson on Dec 9, 08 05:20 PM

A touching picture from Mail snapper Loretta Brennan, picturing Villa skipper Martin Laursen with Acorns hospice regular Luke Webster.

The club like it so much they have used it as their official Christmas card, again raising the awareness of the Birmingham charity.

Premiership clubs get knocked for lots of things... even Villa were criticised for the price of beer in the ground last week.

But some efforts put certain clubs above the others, and not many in football take Villa's commitment to Acorns lightly.

The Birmingham Mail was certainly proud to be of assistance. Full story here.

Brummie bites back

By Steve Dyson on Dec 9, 08 08:28 AM

In fairness to the London-centric Guardian, they appear to have acknowledged that their columnist may have made some presumptive errors by publishing a full response in today's paper on p35, or at this link.

One of the things that annoys me most is London-centric toffs getting it wrong about the regions.

It happens too often... Longbridge, the infamous Brummie accent, pork scratchings, warm ale and flat caps. You name it, they presume anything north of Watford Gap is stuck in the 1950s.

Well they pushed me too hard this weekend with this ill-informed diatribe

OK, journalism is changing, but there are so many generalisations, inaccuracies and rose-tinted spectacles in this pontification that I think I'm going to write a letter to the Editor!!
