Arrivederci!

By Steve Dyson on Jul 26, 08 04:55 PM

And so the time comes to put the paper down, and pick up a long-awaited book for my travels instead.

Yep, although some say the chair is like a holiday, we get paid-breaks in this job too, believe it or not!

Seriously, while it can be hard to tear oneself away, it's definitely time for sun, sand and some Sicilian culture.

The book is The Honoured Society by Norman Lewis, said to be the seminal work on the mafia, and although the flight's not until the early hours I've decided to get into it now.

San Vito lo Capo here we come...

If I see an internet cafe, I might update you on how I find the Palermo press... (but then again, I might not!)

Gotta go... house-sitters have arrived. Shades, hat and kids to find...

Ciao!

THE SPORTS ARGUS LIVES!!
I thought I'd dip back into work mode with a mini-report on Sicilian media. Our main base on the coast west of Palermo has no easy internet access, but today we've crossed the island for an overnight at Catania, before scaling Mt Etna tomorrow, and the hotel is linked up. (For info, it's called Villa Mater (Mother of Villa!?? Not quite... judging by pictures and the garden, it's a kind of hotel shrine to Mary.) Anyway, Scilian meida. The usual mainland Italian newspapers are all on sale (la Repubblica, etc), and Sicily also has its own regionals. The one by our main base is Il Giornale di Sicillia. But the BIG sale over here appears to be Gazzetta dello Sport, on pink paper! Yes, the equivalent of our old independent Sports Argus is the main sale. Imagine!

How are you going to manage? Having to deal with a foreign language and eating all that foreign muck!! Hope you took your knotted hanky with you so you can be the complete english tourist abroad!!

Maybe the Sports Argus could have been a BIG sale again had it been given a chance?
