'Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky...'
'Stormy Weather' is not just a class Ethel Waters song.
It also creates great breaking news.
At 8.55am today we were finalising the first edition splash on a new bug crisis at five hospital wards in Birmingham. And then the stormy weather caused safety experts to call Cheltenham off.
A quick change of page 1 had the Mail leading on the live story of the day.
Quick, simple, informative, buyable. 'Cheltenham Festival off'.
Very satisfying for a newspaper man, you might think. I did.
At least I did until Mrs D called with news that stormy weather had also wrecked our plans to spend Easter week in a cottage next to Praa Sands near Porthleven in Cornwall...
A damaged cottage means the holiday has been cancelled.
ARRRRGGGHHHHH! Stormy bl**dy weather! It always was a song that pined on about disappointment...
