Spangly leotards are all the rage

I dragged myself off the sofa last night, but I'm not proud of it.

It was the first night of Dancing on Ice last night and with Mrs Me being an avid fan of the TV skating show, I knew better than to disappoint a heavily pregnant lady with the 'why would I want to watch men in spangly leotards' line.

So off we went to an NIA full of women who should know better screaming at 'celebs' who should do better.

But the strangest thing of all was - and whisper it quietly - that I actually quite enjoyed it.

The TV show is faithfully recreated, complete with a text vote and the lot. Even the judges were there along with that well known local ice skating officionado, BRMB's Tammy Gooding. No, I didn't understand it either.

A few observations of the stars we've seen on TV:

* As the wife put it: 'Gareth Gates has a better figure than his skating partner'. As I countered: 'No, he's just bandy-legged'.

* Linda Lusardi is worse on the ice than she looks on TV. Much worse.

* I can't look at Suzanne Shaw without thinking of Darren Day. And that's a thought I don't want to have if I can help it.

* Kyran Bracken can't half skate, but he does have one of the strangest hair cuts I've ever seen. It reminds me of a dinner lady we used to have at school.

* Bonnie Langford - the female equivalent of a Stretch Armstrong and the smallest person in the world...ever.

* Andi Peters. What Torvill and Dean are to ice skating, Andi Peters is to dying on his backside. He made Lenny Henry look funny last night. No mean feat.

Nevertheless, Dancing on Ice - The Tour was a good old-fashioned panto evening full of hissing and booing which you'd be well advised to see before it hits the road again on Sunday, even if it's just to see some of the pro skaters show what they can do when they're not pushing celebrities round the ice.
