A colleague, returning from the newsroom's kitchen, made an interesting observation this afternoon.

Whatever is cooking in a microwave oven smells the same, she said.

She's right - soup, pasta dishes, pies and pasties all seem to emit the same greasy smell. The exception - and there's always an exception to every rule - are the kippers that a workmate sometimes heats up, unmindful of the way their smoky, fishy stench spreads across the floor.

I don't own a micrrowave and can count on the podgy fingers of one hand how often I have used the device in the office.
