During these early summer weeks every two years, the eating habits of the Fulford family change suddenly (and, thank goodness, temporarily) because of the televised football from either the World Cup or European championships.

With none of the home nations participating this year, I thought things would be different. But no: I'm hooked and plonk myself in front of the telly for both the late afternoon and mid-evening games.

Consequently we eat - usually quite rapidly - in the period in between games. Easy-to-cook meals provide the answer some days. On others we raid the freezer for a chilli con carne or bolognaise sauce prepared some weeks earlier.
