In a couple of weeks we'll be carrying a guide to the sort of treats people might enjoy on Valentine's Day.
My contribution has been to compile a list of drinks suited to such a romantic occasion.
Champagne is in the list, of course. And Chablis to neck back with oysters. Plus Sauternes to sup with strawberries.
Then there's an Italian beer on the grounds that Italian men are known for their love-making prowess so a bottle or two or their favourite brew might help us under-achieving Brits.
A colleague set me thinking today. She and her partner are celebrating Valentine's Day on Wednesday rather than Thursday on the assumption that they'll get a better deal at the restaurant they're visiting.
Not very romantic, I know. But she has a point. Restaurants on February 14 are often over-priced. They frequently have more than one sitting so diners are hurried along. And sometimes they can't cope with the number of punters who turn up.
The alternative, of course, is to cook a romantic meal at home. Or simply dismiss the whole Valentine's Day thing as a huge commercial gimmick...if you don't mind spending the rest of the year apologising to your beloved for ignoring the event.
