A friend phoned asking me to recommend a typical British gastro-pub in the centre of Birmingham for some Dutch visitors who are heading here.

There was no where I could think of.

There are plenty of pubs where you can be sure of a good pint and might be able to get a decent sandwich or pie. And there are a few places like the Metro Bar serving restaurant-quality food.

But where are the places like London's famous gastro-pubs or, say, the Highwayman in Kirkby Lonsdale in Lancashire?
