Another birthday, another excuse for a meal at one of Birmingham's best.
Last night as I edged closer to my dotage, I visited Edmunds and the food was fantastic - modern but grounded in the classic French/British tradition and fabulously well-crafted.
Its chef-patron Andy Waters won a Michelin star when he ran a restaurant of the same name in Henley-in-Arden and I'm certain a similar honour will be bestowed when next year's guide is published.
Just think: Brum would have four starred restaurants to Manchester's none.
Birmingham 4 - Manchester 0....a dream scoreline.
Andy Waters's new restaurant Edmunds has finally opened at Brindleyplace and I popped along yesterday for a chat and a coffee with him.
I was impressed by the ambience (modern, unfussy) and the menu (classical food with a light, contemporary touch).
Andy, who was at Simpson's when it first got its Michelin star and got one at his old Edmunds restaurant in Henley-in-Arden, reckons he might have opened too late in the year to get star when the new guide comes out next spring.
There's an interview with him in the Food + Drink section of the Mail and July 17.
A meal at Cielo last night ranked as one of the most enjoyable I've eaten in Birmingham for a while - good combinations or flavours and textures, precise cooking, friendly and efficient service.
Andy Waters, who won a Michelin star at his now closed restaurant Edmund's in Henley-in Arden, is consultant chef at Cielo and has assembled a good team in the kitchen there.
He popped front-of-house for a chat and said his new restaurant - again called Edmund's and launched in conjunction with the guys from Cielo - is scheduled to open in premises almost next door in late May or maybe early June.
There are also plans to open a posh basement bar nearby, probably next year, offering upmarket snacky food such as oysters and smoked salmon.
Congratulations to Cielo and Andy Waters for the awards they won at the Best of Broad Street bash this week - Cielo for best restaurant, Andy for best chef.
Likewise congratulations to the other individuals and establishments recognised at the event at the ICC.
It was an enjoyable and lively night. I'm usually underwhelmed by the standard of meals at big events such as this, but have to say the food here was good. The kitchen at the ICC carries a big responsibility, catering for visiting movers and shakers who I would like to think leave with a good impression of Birmingham. On this evidence, the ICC's chefs (and serving staff) are playing their part.
