By Paul Birch on Oct 16, 09 07:26 AM

LIAM SHARP will be talking about his career as a comic strip illustrator, and his involvement in film and TV industry at QUAD in Derby on Wednesday 28th October.

Twenty years ago Liam Sharp made his presence known within the British comics industry drawing Judge Dredd for 2000AD and Death's Head for Marvel UK. His talents would be sought out in America where he would draw comics like The Incredible Hulk for Marvel, Spawn for Image, and currently the bestselling Gears of War for DC's Wildstorm imprint.

Establishing his own comics company, Mam Tor, he produced the Event Horizon anthology title, and with top advertising agency Mother (London) to produce a free comic for Time Out, that appeared as a quarterly in 2008. His other advertising work includes the poster and comic for the recent Rubberduckzilla campaign for Oasis, and the Hello You campaign for Diet Coke featuring Duffy. His work can also be seen on US TV in the current Do You Speak Coke? campaign for Coca-Cola.

His critically acclaimed first novel, the epic sci-fi/fantasy God Killers was published last year and he has worked as a concept designer on the movies Lost in Space & Small Soldiers.

The event is free, takes place at QUAD, Market Place, Cathedral Quarter, Derby on Wednesday, 28 October from 7.30pm and promises to be candid and honest. "There'll be a slideshow, show-reel, questions & answers and definitely a pint or three afterwards!" quipped the creator.

It will be a highly entertaining and popular evening and you can book a place by emailing: cin@derbyquad.co.uk.

GOD KILLERS, the novel written by comic book artist/writer Liam Sharp is attracting international attention.

Sharp, the artist on the best-selling Gears of War, published by WildStorm Comics recently revealed that a number of publishers across Europe have been expressing an interest in publishing foreign language editions of his fictional work.

God Killers is now in its second UK printing and still selling well, having received positive reviews from publications like SFX Magazine and from authors such as China MiƩville.

Described by the author as "a graphic anti-war fable dressed up as a heroic fantasy," the book is available in all good UK bookshops and via Amazon.

GIANT-SIZED BAND-THING the band formed by comic book personalities Charlie Adlard, Paul H Birch, Liam Sharp and Phil Winslade contines to rock on.

The band formed at short notice to play a one-off gig for the launch party at last year's Birmingham International Comics Show.

Following the positive reception they received from the crowd, alongside being surprised at how much they enjoyed playing together, the band decided to continue and this year has found them playing live again, plus writing their own material.

They have just recently launched a page on Facebook and gathered about 150 fans on it, while over at Myspace they have over 300 friends.

GIANT-SIZED BAND-THING, the four-piece rock band featuring comic book creators, will be playing a corporate gig as part of anniversary celebrations for Infinity & Beyond in Shrewsbury on Saturday 28th April.

The band formed at the tail end of last year, heading the line-up for the launch party at BICS 2008 where according to the likes of Paul Cornell (writer for the Dr Who TV series): "Giant-Sized Band-Thing rocked the house".

Giant-Sized Band-Thing will be signing comics at Infinity & Beyond from 3pm, while the private party celebrations kicks off around 6.0pm, with the band playing an early evening set.

And that last one's also a little teaser to reveal: the Giant-Size Band-Thing will strut its humongous stuff once more when you least expect it in 2009!

THE BIRMINGHAM International Comics Show (BICS) takes place on the weekend of 4-5th October, and those who have pre-booked their tickets are again invited to attend the show's launch party on the Friday beforehand.

The launch party is a time of enormous fun where comic fans get the opportunity to mingle with the show's many star guests in less formal surroundings. A buffet is being put on courtesy of Infinity & Beyond and live music will performed by individuals involved within the comics industry.

This year sees the welcome return of internationally celebrated cartoonist Hunt Emerson and his band. Hunt (noted for strips within The Beano and books like Casanova's Last Stand) told me people were asking if they had CDs for sale after last year's show, their popularity thus ensuring the reason why they have been requested back.

DC Comics editor Michael Wright will also be putting in another stage appearance, this time as part of a duo for a more intimate set.

A new addition to the launch party's attractions is what could be the one and only appearance of the Giant-Sized Band-Thing. This four piece has been put together at the last minute but promises surprises and fun to ensure they deliver a great party atmosphere.

Giant-Sized Band-Thing features Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead, Green Lantern/Green Arrow) on drums, Paul H Birch (Dead Ahead, Gumby Comics) on bass, Liam Sharp (Gears of War, Testament) on lead vocals, with Phil Winslade (The Brave & The Bold, Daredevil) on lead guitar.

Giant-Sized Band-Thing's appearance at the launch party has been sponsored by their wives... Who have let them out to play for the night!

The art featured within this item is another Speech Balloons exclusive. It was produced but not used by Liam during his own run on the Marvel comic Man-Thing, from which the band partly derived its name.

The BICS launch party will again take place at Bennetts Wine Bar (up Bennetts Hill, off New Street). For details regarding entry to the event you are advised to visit the convention's official website.
