The most depressing thing about the allegations that votes can be bought in the House of Lords is the fact that no one is surprised. We just accept it as par for the course which gives some idea of the standing of politicians in society. MPs and politically appointed peers must be pretty well near the bottom of the pile.

Mind you on the basis that the Metropolitan Police are the probably the only people in the land who don't believe that honours could be bought it is hardly a leap of imagination for the rest of us to assume that votes have a price as well.
