I see our bankers (not a misprint) are threatening that if we stop allowing them to pay themselves whatever fabulous figure comes into their heads they will all leave the country in a fit of pique.

While we are in the midst of the MP baiting season the bankers must be on their knees, or at least have underlings doing it for them, thanking the gods of greed.

They bring the country, and indeed the world, to its knees, and far from hanging from lampposts we find they have drifted back into the very well-appointed shadows and are being allowed to carry on with business and, of course, bonuses, as normal.

The only real difference is that we are now paying out the bonuses with our taxes as well as interest and bank charges.

And don't expect any of the reports called for by either our Government, or indeed the EU, to make much difference.

It was Chancellor Gordon Brown's light touch regulation - light as in no one would ever feel it - that contributed to this mess and the chances of anyone admitting any responsibility either here or in Brussels are close to nil so once the dust has settled I suspect the biggest change we will see in banking is our collection of failed former building societies changing their name to Santander.

As for the rest - the bankers will carry on doing whatever they want whether we own the banks or not.
