Clash of the Titans

By Paul Berry on Mar 6, 08 08:49 PM

So there's been a dressing room bust-up between Wolves boss Mick McCarthy and his captain Gary Breen.

In other news hot off the press the Pope is understood to be Catholic, the sky is blue and bears do actually go to the toilet in the woods.

Dressing room altercations - some verbal, some physical - go off in venues up and down the country week-in week-out.

With the amount at stake in modern football, and the amount of tension, testosterone and trepidation packed into any like-minded team of footballers, it's inevitable.

The only surprise is that on this occasion the news was leaked, apparently from a steward.

But the fact it was McCarthy and Breen involved is perhaps less of a surprise.

Both are big characters, strong characters, fiercely competitive and harbouring an almost vicious will-to-win.

Both would have been engulfed in anger at the concession of Tuesday's last gasp equaliser, immediately aware of its potential significance for Wolves' play-off hopes.

And of course both know each other infinitely well after a manager/player relationship built up over years with Ireland, Sunderland and now Wolves.

What's the first spur-of-the-moment reaction after a moment of crushing disappointment? To lash out at someone close, that's what.

That may sound a bit all over-emotional and Sex in the City, but that's why McCarthy will have launched a tirade at Breen and nobody else amid the angst of the defensive disaster.

Of course McCarthy's detractors may view it as a sign of him losing the plot, of not being able to control his emotions amid the rising heat of battle.

And without doubt the incident offers a stark indication of the frayed tempers currently enveloping Molineux, not helped by an increasingly unhelpful crowd some of whom have now taken to jeering Karl Henry ten months after voting him third in their Player of the Year.

But why not take it to the opposite extreme, particularly as the pair have now kissed and made up and vowed to move on without further recriminations.

Why not just view it all as a sign of just how much they care?
