Back in April the old Met Office told us we were in for a barbeque summer - which they revised this week to a barbeque summer as long as the barbeque was under cover and you wore wellies and a life jacket.
The interesting thing was that the fact they got it so woefully wrong surprised no one. It was just accepted that weather forecasting is like that. If they tell you it will be sunny then take a brolly. All of which begs the question why do so many people stand in awe of all the pseudo science cobblers spouted under the umbrella of global warming.
If our scientists can't even predict the weather five months ahead why do we think that they are going to be accurate when they tell us what we are in for not five months but five decades hence.
There is no proof whatsoever that CO2 production has any measurable effect on global warming yet stick green in front of anything these days and it is an excuse to up prices, create new professions and industries - with yet another explosion of parasitic consultants - fund endless, mindless research projects and, most attractive of all to those in power, create a new derivative market in carbon emissions trading along with a new raft of environmental taxes which we can be told are all for our own good. The fact they swell treasury coffers is merely a happy coincidence.
So next time some scientist tries to justify his research grant or puts down his marker for a knighthood by telling us we are all doomed unless we mend our ways and pay our green taxes - remember the barbeque summer.
Remember a couple of years ago when the global warming gurus were telling us all we were in for hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. You may have noticed that there has been a bit of a silence in the old predictions department in the frozen hut on the other side of the snowdrift.
No doubt though our intrepid scientific carpet baggers are already filling in the grant application forms to build new improved climate models to explain why we have had the coldest January since climate change grants began.
Our scientists have not been slow to notice that if they stick global warming or climate change in a research proposal then funding follows as night follows day - The Effects of Climate Change on Naval Recruitment in the 18th Century or Global Warming and its Influence on Kent Apple Production in the First World War, that sort of thing.
And Governments love the whole movement as it is a world of taxes which can be fobbed off as responsible and necessary to save the planet - ignoring the fact tropical rain forests are being wiped out faster than ever in the rush to grow crops for bio fuels. No one looks too closely at the economics of the fuels, not while multinationals are making huge profits thanks to subsidies.
We have made a real mess of the earth and the creatures who live upon it so it is about time we started to think about what sort of world we want to hand over to future generations but that is all being lost under the crushing wheels of the global warming, bandwagon which is steamrollering all in its path with pseudoscientific babble and claptrap.
The earth has warmed and cooled long before we appeared and will do so long after we have gone the way of mammoths and dinosaurs and, no matter what the scientists came up with in their expensively taxpayer funded models, there will always be a risk of frost in January. It's called winter so put that in your model and freeze it.
