Anyone else getting a little tired of these constant calls to increase the price of booze whenever figures come out about increasing levels of drunkenness with the latest set of shock-horror statistics having the added bonus of drunken yobbery being the top offence for young women?
Why should the rest of us have to suffer with extra taxes or higher prices just because an element in society have no concept of civilised behaviour? Putting up prices might make sense in the world of academia but anyone in the real world will know the only effect of a hike in prices will be more money in the treasury coffers and higher retail profits. Locals will be under even more pressure with even more going under while the yobbos will still find the money and still get legless. As with everything else Whitehall comes up with, it will be the pensioners and the poor souls on PAYE in the middle who end up taking the brunt of the increase. For the rest it will be business as normal.
The fault is not in prices but in a society where the idea of family or community is positively discouraged to the point where it is financially advantageous to be an unmarried single parent while responsibility, discipline and punishment seem to be alien concepts to a Government heavy on spin and light on action.
As for 24 hour drinking creating a cafe culture . . .whichever collection of boneheads in Whitehall thought having city centre bars permanently open would have skinheads with love and hate tattooed on their knuckles playing boules in BrindleyPlace or discussing Satre over a cognac and coffee should now be selling Big Issue.
A cafe culture is borne out of family and community where people live and culture and education in city centres, not out of giving rudderless, disaffected youngsters, who are already well capable of slinging copious quantities of lager down their necks, another 12 hours of drinking time to prove how really mindless their lives are.
