Foster home for Ben
Funny how things come full circle.
Take the picture below. Seventy-eighth minute. Old Trafford. Opening day of the season.
Manchester United's Ben Foster pulls off a crucial fingertip save to stop Christian Benitez marking an exciting cameo debut with an equaliser.
It gave us our first glimpse of Chucho (and also showed a sign of things to come in front of goal).
And for Foster, he hoped it the start of an opportunity to stake a claim for the number one jersey at United.
Benitez has been told 'thanks, but no thanks' - and so has Foster.
After losing his place at United, and being lambasted for a couple of errors during that early spell of games, which are magnified tenfold when you play for such a club, he is now at Blues.
Foster fell out of the England reckoning too as his career threatened to stagnate.
He saw what Joe Hart did at St Andrew's, what the value was of regular football, in a tight-knit team with a good manager and good goalkeeper coach.
Nobody knew what quite to expect of Hart when he joined Blues on loan from Manchester City. But, like the side as a whole, he far exceeded our expectations - and he's going to the World Cup finals.
Foster, having taken stock, will look to emulate Blues player-of-the-season.
He has a hunger to succeed and show again why he was once thought of the man most likely to establish himself as England's first choice between the sticks for years to come.
Hart, pictured saluting Blues fans in an emotional farewell at Bolton Wanderers after the season's final game, left Manchester for similar reasons. He wanted his career to progress, he wanted to prove himself.
He would have gladly returned to Blues but his performances, which were basically error-free, made the Eastlands outfit realise what they had on their doorstep.
Imagine a few months down the line now, Foster and Hart both in the England squad, competing to become David James' heir apparent. Don't be surprised if that happens.
Credit Blues, too, for not dilly-dallying. They, sensibly, made contingency plans several weeks ago on the assumption that Hart would not be staying and Foster was identified immediately as the goalkeeper to go for.
Alex McLeish couldn't afford to hang around all summer to see what Manchester planned to do. And it still might be that they sign another goalkeeper (money is no object) and Hart, who won't settle for second fiddle, becomes available.
That was too big a risk to take and Foster could have gone elsewhere if Big Eck had decided to hang fire.
The ã6 million outlay shows, too, that Carson Yeung - shock, horror - is prepared to fund transfer dealings. And the importance of the goalkeeper position is such that McLeish was told they would do whatever it took to get the right replacement for Hart.
Ultimately, Yeung will be judged on by the time the window closes on August 31, and rightly so.
He won't go crazy and let McLeish take the club down the Portsmouth route. Don't expect ã40 million to be spent on fees alone.
Blues have tried for other players already, and tabled a very attractive contract to Cacau on a Bosman free transfer.
And the suspects named, they are very serious about.
I always find it puzzling that some think their targets are 'leaked', or bids have gone in under the perceived asking price just to look good.
That's not the case at all. McLeish has been very scrupulous and it is the media's job to try to find out where exactly clubs are looking and write accordingly.
You will get agents, for obvious reasons, encouraging speculation and trying to drum up interest via the newspapers and television. How many clubs have supposedly wanted to sign Kasper Schmeichel, for instance?
But there is no sham concerning what Blues are doing, and have been doing, since the season's end.
They like, for instance, Charles N'Zogbia (pictured above) and remain hopeful that over forthcoming weeks they can barter an agreement with Wigan Athletic.
And they wouldn't go in for such players in the first place if they didn't have reason to believe that they would entertain a move to St Andrew's - as Foster certainly did.

Colin, if someone was stealing your milk from the communal fridge at work - a full bottle, as well - how would you handle it?
Tatts,
I just went out to Somerfield and bought myself some crackers. Got back to the office, opened the fridge, only to discover that the cheese I'd got my eye on had been licked by some dirty *****.
What would Eck do under these trying circumstances?
Colin, players are not fools they can see Blues are on the up and as Foster said they know what a good manager Big Eck is, this makes Blues an attractive club at the moment.
It's great to see Eck getting his business done early. Really would like to see N'Zogbia sign, fingers are tightly crossed on this one.
A couple of strikers to follow and I think we can look forward with confidence to next season.

Colin,
May I apologise for the childish and puerile 'comments' added on here by refugees from my editorial team on Small Heath Alliance. It's not big and it's certainly not clever. I shall apply for a restraining order on them.
Here at the Blues fan club in Penarth we are well chuffed with the boy's singing
If I wants something I takes it. Haven't purchased any dairy produce since 1959, in that time I've saved over ã6470. So who's the loser now Dorothy Braithwaite class 6B Lockston Street secondary modern, eh eh? Thought so.
It is obvious that nobody has a clue who is being bid for apart from the hierachy at 2 clubs and the agents involved. Leaks are part and parcel of the football business. My pal is an agent, not prem but a few lower league players, he is constantly trying to sound out managers and clubs about his players.
Like Eck said, he has hundreds of names dropped on his desk, every player is good and a good price but the only ones we should be interested in are Eck's targets, who they are, we will have to wait and see.
Colin, regarding your Chucho comment as well, lets just say that will come back to bite you as well as the Joe Hart comments from the start of the season did. Carlton Cole scored 3 goals in his first full season and now he is touted as a 15 million pound player??!!!
whorya, thanks for the input. I'd like to think that the stories we have carried in the Mail shows the players Blues have indeed gone for. We try to sort out the wheat from the chaff in that respect. Regards Chucho, I still can't fathom him: he's a good player but I don't believe a finisher, certainly on the evidence of this season. Regards the Joe Hart comments, you may be confusing me with another writer who argued he should have been dropped during the season. After watching him in pre-season and in training, I predicted he could break into the England reckoning. So there.
I am glad that you only report what you think are 'definate' interests and not just any old name.
Chucho will be a great finisher, how many did Linekar, Shearer, Owen etc etc get in their first full seasons? Not many. I think nowadays we expect far too much from players instead of giving them time. The simple question is who can we buy for ã5mill that has skill, trickery and a bit of pace? Again, no one!!
Zamora is pushing 30, Cole is good but ã15, who else?
Joe Hart- you must have thought the same as me then, he is another who has great talent and needs time to develop.
Have a good summer holiday Tatts
Michael Owen was the Premier League's top scorer in his first full season!
Shearer scored a hat trick on his full debut against Arsenal of all teams!
Chucho missed a golden chance to equalise on his debut and I think that sums him up to be fair.
If he was any good, he wouldn't have been with us to begin with!
how much did they cost on the transfer market ã15million each?
Shearer scored 3 goals in 26 appearances and then 4 goals in 36 appearances!!!!! Then went on to be one of the best around!!!!
When Wet Spam et al don't cough up sufficient readies for Benitez then Santos Laguna will be back on the phone to say "Cuál entonces era esa oferta. We' áel ll lo acepta!"
At least that's what AM could be waiting for.
But you could see with Shearer that he had something. To score a hat trick on your debut against Arsenal at the age of 17 sort of gives people the impression that you're half decent.
Chucho is not exactly a kid and isn't fit to wipe Shearer's buttocks! End of!
Let's just agree to disagree. I just don't think you can compare Chucho to some of the best players this country has ever seen!
spoons, i have and the comparison is the same, 3 goals in a season (chucho better) what i am saying is people are so quick to judge and criticise and not give players a chance ala Chucho, i wouldnt be surprised in the slightest if he came back to the prem and scored 15 goals. The talent is there, people like you want things now now now, spoilt is the word they use.
