Window pain
Because Blues had ã40 million available, it didn't follow that they were obliged to spend it.
However, the very fact they didn't, and Alex McLeish's stated aim to sign a striker failed to come to fruition, has triggered a fair old debate.
Let's get one thing straight about the doubt over the transfer kitty: to my knowledge the money was there.
Last Friday Peter Pannu showed me a budget document concerning targets.
Listed were Michel, Craig Gardner, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Aruna Dindane and their fees plus wages over the length of contract. The total bill was ã31 million.
Blues were prepared to pay that much, and perhaps more if another player cropped up late on. If they weren't, or the money wasn't there, they would have looked pretty daft making the bids they did.
No promises were ever broken because none were ever made.
The ã40 million pledged by Carson Yeung, he made clear at the time, was for transfer fees and salaries.
I don't think we should be drawing comparisons with West Ham United in a 'them or us' type of ownership contest, as some have done.
Blues considered Mido but passed him up. He and Benni McCarthy were classic David Sullivan stop-gap signings. And Ilan, the dramatically touted, in classic Sullivan style, 'Brazilian signing'.
The Hammers are fighting a relegation battle. Blues are not.
Blues have never before been prepared to offer sums varying between ã8 million - ã11 million for players either in any window.
Out-going wise, I wouldn't have loaned Marcus Bent. Obviously he has no long-term future but he could do a decent enough turn if needed in an emergency.
As for the others who have departed - Damien Johnson, Martin Taylor, Gary McSheffrey, Krystian Pearce, not forgetting Giovanny Espinoza - there is certainly an element of risk in leaving the squad short.
McLeish was philosophical about the events up to and on deadline day when we spoke, but he understood some of the outcry.
He stuck to his guns in that he wouldn't pay inflated fees - and the market is ridiculous at present - and wouldn't bring someone in who he felt was not as good or an improvement on the options up front.
And, moreover, it proved far more difficult to reach agreement with the clubs Blues wanted to purchase from than they originally imagined.
Harry Redknapp and Rafa Benitez were wary of moving out Pavlyuchenko and Babel respectively and then watching them come back to haunt.
I have a feeling there's more to the collpase of the Dindane attempt than meets the eye, and he ended up staying at Lens after all.
Marc Janko was never a first choice but became a potential back-stop. However, negotiations proved complex there too and no loan materialised.
I have sympathy with Blues over Pavyluchenko as they met the ã10 million asking price on Friday and then it was suddenly raised.
Dealing with Daniel Levy has given the Chinese owners an eye-opening taste of how business is done here, especially in the January window.
Only time will tell if McLeish and the club's decisions prove to be correct. Time after the summer window has shut.
There is immense pressure on Blues to deliver big names now and should they tail off during the remainder of the season, that will only increase.
The likes of Aiden McGeady, Charles N'Zogbia, Pavyluchenko will now have to keep.
I think it's a tad unfair to lob in accusations of procrastination and being over-cautious.
Sure enough Eck does like to be just so, sometime too much, before taking the plunge.
But you have to factor in that only those in the Wast Hills inner sanctum and boardroom know all the fine details of every player targeted, whether financial or other, and how deals fell down or were scrubbed. And those details are unlikely to slip too much into the public domain.
I think most of us would also have balked at ã70k-a-week for Kenwyne Jones, ditto Kevin Kuranyi.
We can all forget that it's easier for us on the outside. It's black and white when it comes to buying players as if on the PlayStation or Xbox.
And the crazy way the January window has evolved, with Jim White and others working themselves up into an orgasmic frenzy, it's as if you have to buy, buy, buy.
Last year on deadline day there were seven deals of ã10 million or more. This year less than ã20 million in total was spent. The economic landscape has changed.
Blues league position, ability and durability - so far - of the side has lessened the need for panic signings, especially the stop-gaps.
When you are trying to up-grade the squad in quality it is naturally harder to sign the required type of players. And you don't want to take a punt and just hope it comes off.
This all adds to the irony in that I don't think I can ever recall Blues fans so opinionated and, in some quarters, so hostile about the lack of success on a new striker.
When Chris Sutton, DJ Campbell and Martin Latka came in that January 2006, the club's circumstances were different. The expectation, fuelled by the ã40 million pledge, has rocketed.
Had McLeish brought in those types now, who would have been happy? And boy did Emile Heskey need help that season, more than was secured.
Blues may well fade the back-end of the season; the counter argument is that they have got this far without being prolific scorers in any case.
Time, indeed, will tell and as McLeish has asked to be trusted, considering he delivered promotion and then guided the team to exceed most dreams already this season, he deserves some slack, while the board - whose intentions have been honest and good since day one - will have learnt some lessons about window shopping.

Finally a well balanced and well reasoned piece.
But can you confirm, do we own Chucho or is he on loan.
completly agree with all the above !
whilst i was dissapointed we didn't sign the "big name" as it stands we don't need to spend over the odds !and we would have spent over the odd
the squad we have is more than good enough this year keep the games coming and the team progressing :-)

We didn't need to sign a 'big name' we needed some back up. There were loan signings available in Kone and Okaka. We are left desperately short in a key position that has already proved problematic for us. Hopefully we will be lucky with injuries or we could seriously struggle in that position over the next 15 games as allowing Mcsheffrey and Bent to leave without a replacement looks like a mistake, just in terms of options in that position should worse come to worst.
I am slightly amazed that over 4 months we couldn't secure a player we wanted?
It's simple to think that we could just sign a player like that because we like them. Spurs and Liverpool obviously were difficult to deal with but it's good that the players wanted to come. January is always manic and it will be better for us in the summer when we can line people up earlier and make sure they are exactly right. Great blog and some sensible points made. McSheff, Bent, Tiny and Jonty didn't contribute anything to our position so why are they such a great loss as Gardner and Michel are in?
Everyone has a pop at Blues but did Wolves sign anyone? Nope. Where was their planning, their millions etc. Look at West Ham. Makes you laugh Sully said they were in for van Nistelrooy, Gudjohnsen, Huntelaar and they end up with Mido, McCarthy and someone unknown Brazilian. Sounds familiar or what?
I couldn't care less about West Ham or Wolves and what they have done. I'm only concerned by the fact that we are only 2 injuries away from a striker crisis. Phillips is 35 so is going to pick up niggles and Jerome has always been susceptible to an injury.
So we move Mcfadden people say, well then that results in us playing a right footer out of position on the left and leaves us with no attacking options on the bench
Tatts - as always a very fair blog on the goings on on in the window.
Andy - I agree totally with you. OK we tried and failed to land the striker we wanted, I can live with that. But why then make it difficult for ourselves by letting go two players who could provide cover should CJ or CB get injured.
That is something that I cannot understand and McLeish has failed to answer. Tatts this is something a lot of people are wondering about - any chance of getting a comment from Mcleish?
Personally i completely agree that Blue shouldn't pay over the odds for players at this stage. unfortunately it is something that is inevitable if the management and board wish to capture their "household name." What does baffle me though is from the time the new board took over at the club until the start of January i read a number of articles in the mail relating to McLeish and his staff carrying out their homework in the light of the nearing transfer market. Then over the last few days there seems to have been a rush/panic to get a striker in. Fair enough that we wont pay over the odds but if your homesworks been done then why weren't the offers put in at the start of Jan in order for us to chase up or iron out sticking points with possible targets. It just a thought. Anyway its now time to get behind the lads on the pitch for the rest of the season. KRO
Mat how do we know offers weren't put in start of January and clubs wouldn't do busines then either? Like any club Blues can't physically force another club to sell a player. I'm sure they will have been trying all window on players but push always comes the shove on deadline day it's way it works. Andy, Fahey has done really well on the left he has been far better than McSheffrey. Michel and Gardner provide attacking options we could even go narrow in a 4-3-3. Vignal can play wide left Murphy as well. I don't think we need to get stressed out the quality should come in the summer
Taity Rave - true we dont know that offers wernt put in early Jan. I can only go off what is reported in the papers/websites and its true to say these aren't always correct. I think your correct in saying about push coming to shove on deadline day, i just dont think Blues needed to get to that stage. Im still happy they didnt pay over the odds for any player because theres always the chance that it may not have worked out. Hopefully the summer proves to be more successful but theres no saying that the clubs will sell then either. Especially if the Blues go onto have a successful run in to the end of the season.
I hope this doesn't affect our chances of getting to Wembley is all.
We ought to be seeing more of Phillips and Jervis anyway, and it's time to start giving both of them more playing time in my opinion.
John B - Jervis is young kid who was knackered after 20 mins against Chelsea he's a prospect for the future that's all. Phillips is OK as a sub but can't last 90 mins.
We are desparately light up front and Mcleish knows it. We just have to pray that Jerome and Benitez stay fit.
Thanks for clearing the transfer window up in such a clear way.
We are all disappointed that we did not get the right players in and especially a striker, but i would of been more disappointed if we had bought the wrong player on wages that would of been wasted.
We have a great chance to team bulid properly in the summer with funds we have saved. Yueng will see us right in the summer and i have all the faith in the world with them especially after certain emails i have had with people.
We will be in the prem next year for certain and we may find that missing out on Europe will be a blessing in disguise.
Alex is a manager we should all trust in as he is the best manager in every department we have had. He knows football and he knows money that is a perfect combination.

Brilliant blog Tatts.
I'm still baffled. I understand AM not wanting to pay over the odds, most clubs do in January to get the players they want. It was clear before the window the forward line needed strengthening. If Kevin Phillips was not deemed good enough that much before the window how can he be now ? (KP being mentioned as one of four strikers by AM in his website comments yesterday).
I totally see we need to spend wisely. We had an unexpected chance this January to keep the momentum and feel good factor going. If it was "imperative" to get a striker last week it was even more so after Saturday when Jerome and Benitez looked like they both could do with a breather.
With the World Cup coming up history says there won't be much transfer activity until it is over. AM has been brilliant this season yet I feel we missed a golden opportunity this window like in January two seasons ago.
Let's face it we have been punching above our weight all season - credit to Eck and the players for that - and he's gradually rebuilding the squad and team. Sometimes you can't get players. In the summer more will be available, more teams will have money troubles and Carson will be determined to show he means business. You have got to be careful what you buy. Remember when Brucie brought in Melchiot, Gronkjaer, Jarosik and Butt? All flawed or panic buys. Let Eck get on with it and see what the summer brings. Whatever we do this season is a bonus if we're honest
Why did Eck target players who were bordering on the ridiculous financially? why did he not spend money wisely or even better get some loans in to tide us over?
I thought his comments about DEJA VU were a bit out of the blue last week! he had no back up plan if his 2 targets did not work out and i know why the 4 mill deal for Dindane fell apart because they found out he is out of contract in the summer!! shows about due diligence!!
Dindane's knee is shot to bits medical showed That's why he didn't go to Blackburn either Loan or nothing Lens wanted money. Spurs stitched Blues up over Pavchenk
Tatts I was one of the ones comparing our deadline day action to West Ham's in so much that we failed to get cover, not that I would want Mido but was just disappointed at the time, anyway I'm over it now. My question is this, Eck talks about CJ, Chucho, KP and Fadds as 4 striker options, with KP struggling for fitness and Fadds not being an out and out striker why doesn't he mention Jervis? Does he not see him getting even some chances from the bench with our lack of options? Does he not rate him? Why would he rather have no striker on the bench against spurs than try Jervis? If he was to get more opportunities and he makes the step up then we may not need a new striker come the summer anyway.
